THURSJULY24200812:58:02ThankyoutothecitizensofBerlinandtothepeopleofGermany.LetmethankChancellorMerkelandForeignMinisterSteinmeierforwelcomingmeearliertoday.ThankyouMayorWowereit,theBerlinSenate,thepolice,andmostofallthankyouforthiswelcome.IcometoBerlinassomanyofmycountrymenhavecomebefore.Tonight,IspeaktoyounotasacandidateforPresident,butasacitizen--aproudcitizenoftheUnitedStates,andafellowcitizenoftheworld.IknowthatIdon'tlookliketheAmericanswho'vepreviouslyspokeninthisgreatcity.Thejourneythatledmehereisimprobable.MymotherwasbornintheheartlandofAmerica,butmyfathergrewupherdinggoatsinKenya.Hisfather--mygrandfather--wasacook,adomesticservanttotheBritish.AttheheightoftheColdWar,myfatherdecided,likesomanyothersintheforgottencornersoftheworld,thathisyearning--hisdream--requiredthefreedomandopportunitypromisedbytheWest.AndsohewroteletterafterlettertouniversitiesallacrossAmericauntilsomebody,somewhereansweredhisprayerforabetterlife.ThatiswhyI'mhere.Andyouareherebecauseyoutooknowthatyearning.Thiscity,ofallcities,knowsthedreamoffreedom.Andyouknowthattheonlyreasonwestandheretonightisbecausemenandwomenfrombothofournationscametogethertowork,andstruggle,andsacrificeforthatbetterlife.Oursisapartnershipthattrulybegansixtyyearsagothissummer,onthedaywhenthefirstAmericanplanetoucheddownatTemplehof.Onthatday,muchofthiscontinentstilllayinruin.ÊTherubbleofthiscityhadyettobebuiltintoawall.TheSovietshadowhadsweptacrossEasternEurope,whileintheWest,America,Britain,andFrancetookstockoftheirlosses,andponderedhowtheworldmightberemade.Thisiswherethetwosidesmet.ÊAndonthetwenty-fourthofJune,1948,theCommunistschosetoblockadethewesternpartofthecity.TheycutofffoodandsuppliestomorethantwomillionGermansinanefforttoextinguishthelastflameoffreedominBerlin.ThesizeofourforceswasnomatchforthemuchlargerSovietArmy.AndyetretreatwouldhaveallowedCommunismtomarchacrossEurope.Wherethelastwarhadended,anotherWorldWarcouldhaveeasilybegun.AllthatstoodinthewaywasBerlin.ÊAndthat'swhentheairliftbegan--whenthelargestandmostunlikelyrescueinhistorybroughtfoodandhopetothepeopleofthiscity.Theoddswerestackedagainstsuccess.Inthewinter,aheavyfogfilledtheskyabove,andmanyplaneswereforcedtoturnbackwithoutdroppingofftheneededsupplies.Thestreetswherewestandwerefilledwithhungryfamilieswhohadnocomfortfromthecold.ÊButinthedarkesthours,thepeopleofBerlinkepttheflameofhopeburning.ThepeopleofBerlinrefusedtogiveup.Andononefallday,hundredsofthousandsofBerlinerscamehere,totheTiergarten,andheardthecity'smayorimploretheworldnottogiveuponfreedom."Thereisonlyonepossibility,"hesaid."ForustostandtogetheruniteduntilthisbattleiswonÉThepeopleofBerlinhavespoken.Wehavedoneourduty,andwewillkeepondoingourduty.Peopleoftheworld:nowdoyourdutyÉPeopleoftheworld,lookatBerlin!"Peopleoftheworld--lookatBerlin!LookatBerlin,whereGermansandAmericanslearnedtoworktogetherandtrusteachotherlessthanthreeyearsafterfacingeachotheronthefieldofbattle.LookatBerlin,wherethedeterminationofapeoplemetthegenerosityoftheMarshallPlanandcreatedaGermanmiracle;whereavictoryovertyrannygaverisetoNATO,thegreatestallianceeverformedtodefendourcommonsecurity.ÊLookatBerlin,wherethebulletholesinthebuildingsandthesomberstonesandpillarsneartheBrandenburgGateinsistthatweneverforgetourcommonhumanity.ÊPeopleoftheworld--lookatBerlin,whereawallcamedown,acontinentcametogether,andhistoryprovedthatthereisnochallengetoogreatforaworldthatstandsasone.ÊÊSixtyyearsaftertheairlift,wearecalleduponagain.Historyhasledustoanewcrossroad,withnewpromiseandnewperil.Whenyou,theGermanpeople,toredownthatwall--awallthatdividedEastandWest;freedomandtyranny;fearandhope--wallscametumblingdownaroundtheworld.FromKievtoCapeTown,prisoncampswereclosed,andthedoorsofdemocracywereopened.Marketsopenedtoo,andthespreadofinformationandtechnologyreducedbarrierstoopportunityandprosperity.Whilethe20thcenturytaughtusthatweshareacommondestiny,the21sthasrevealedaworldmoreintertwinedthanatanytimeinhumanhistory.ThefalloftheBerlinWallbroughtnewhope.Butthatveryclosenesshasgivenrisetonewdangers--dangersthatcannotbecontainedwithinthebordersofacountryorbythedistanceofanocean.ÊÊwelcomeimmigrantsfromdifferentlands,andshundiscriminationagainstthosewhodon'tlooklikeusorworshiplikewedo,andkeepthepromiseofequalityandopportunityforallofourpeople?PeopleofBerlin--peopleoftheworld--thisisourmoment.Thisisourtime.ÊIknowmycountryhasnotperfecteditself.Attimes,we'vestruggledtokeepthepromiseoflibertyandequalityforallofourpeople.We'vemadeourshareofmistakes,andtherearetimeswhenouractionsaroundtheworldhavenotliveduptoourbestintentions.ButIalsoknowhowmuchIloveAmerica.Iknowthatformorethantwocenturies,wehavestrived--atgreatcostandgreatsacrifice--toformamoreperfectunion;toseek,withothernations,amorehopefulworld.Ourallegiancehasneverbeentoanyparticulartribeorkingdom--indeed,everylanguageisspokeninourcountry;everyculturehasleftitsimprintonours;everypointofviewisexpressedinourpublicsquares.Whathasalwaysunitedus--whathasalwaysdrivenourpeople;whatdrewmyfathertoAmerica'sshores--isasetofidealsthatspeaktoaspirationssharedbyallpeople:thatwecanlivefreefromfearandfreefromwant;thatwecanspeakourmindsandassemblewithwhomeverwechooseandworshipasweplease.Thosearetheaspirationsthatjoinedthefatesofallnationsinthiscity.Thoseaspirationsarebiggerthananythingthatdrivesusapart.Itisbecauseofthoseaspirationsthattheairliftbegan.Itisbecauseofthoseaspirationsthatallfreepeople--everywhere--becamecitizensofBerlin.Itisinpursuitofthoseaspirationsthatanewgeneration--ourgeneration--mustmakeourmarkonhistory.PeopleofBerlin--andpeopleoftheworld--thescaleofourchallengeisgreat.Theroadaheadwillbelong.ButIcomebeforeyoutosaythatweareheirstoastruggleforfreedom.Weareapeopleofimprobablehope.Letusbuildonourcommonhistory,andseizeourcommondestiny,andonceagainengageinthatnoblestruggletobringjusticeandpeacetoourworld.奥巴马柏林演讲全文奥巴马演讲全文奥巴马柏林演讲

我来柏林之前，已有很多我的同胞来过。今晚，我在这里发言，并不是作为总统候选人，而是作为一名值得骄傲的美国公民和一名世界公民的身份。

我知道我并不像以前在这个伟大的城市曾经演讲过的美国人一样。引导我到达这里的征途是神奇的。我的母亲出生在美国的中心，但我父亲在肯尼亚长大，从小放牧山羊。他的父亲——我的祖父是一名英国人的厨师。
