Theresearchwasundertakenonline,
betweenAugustandOctober2023.Surveyswereconductedwith23,700respondents
agedbetween15and65,residingin
householdswheretheinternetisuseddaily.Respondentsareeitherdecision-makerswithinfluenceontheirhousehold
connectivityorwithoverallknowledgeofinternetusagebyothermembersoftheirhousehold.Thestudyequatestoaglobalrepresentationof370millionhouseholdsthatarehometo1.2billionindividuals.

ThekeydriverforhouseholdswhenoptingforFWAisaneedforhighspeed.However,oneinthreehouseholdsbelievethatwiredissuperiortowirelessintermsofspeed,whichisabarriertoFWAadoptionandindicatesaneedtoensurethecommittedspeedsofFWAofferings.

ConvenienceisthemainadvantageofFWA
ManyhouseholdsindicatethatFWAoutperformswired
connectivitysolutionsintermsofflexibility,customization,andeaseofinstallation,withconvenienceasthenotablekeydifferentiatorforFWAasaconnectivityoffering.

SixdistinctsegmentsforfutureuptakeofFWA
HouseholdsexpressinginterestinFWAarenotahomogeneousgroupintermsoftheirneeds.Rather,theyhaveindicatedawiderangeofrequirementswhenselectingFWA.Thisisreflectedinthesixneeds-basedsegmentspresentedinthisstudy.Thesegments,whichareavailableinallmarkets,areimpactedinsizebythe
prevalentmarketconditionsandthesocio-demographicalsituationsofhouseholds.

FWAoffering:Versatilepositions,limitlessopportunities
HouseholdinterestinFWAasapreferredconnectivityofferingprovidesagrowthopportunityforserviceproviderstocapture.Threeofferingsareproposed,leveragingtheadaptabilityofFWA,forserviceproviderstoconsider:
•Value-basedofferings,suitableforprice-sensitivehouseholdsegments.
•Performance-basedofferings,recommendedforhouseholdsprioritizingupgradesofcurrentconnectivityofferings.

Whenlookingathomebroadbandinternetconnectivityona
globallevel,variationscanbeseeninthelevelofconnectivity
achievedbothwithincountriesandbetweendifferentcountries.
Somecountrieshaveahighdeploymentoffiberconnectivityonanationallevel,withcertainruralareaslackingthesamelevelofaccesstoreliableconnectivity.However,insomecountriesimpactedbythedigitaldividethelargemajorityofhomeslack
accesstobroadbandinternetconnectivity.Globally,over1billionhouseholds(closeto50percentofthepopulation)are
underservedintermsofaccesstofastandreliablebroadband.³
Despitetheconnectivitydifferencesbetweencountries,severalobservationscanbenotedwhenlookingattheglobalsatisfactionlevelsamonghouseholds
withtheircurrentconnectivity.As
showninFigure1,aroundtwointhreeofthehouseholdssurveyedstatethat
theyhaveabroadbandconnectionat
home.Themajorityofthemaresatisfiedwiththeircurrentconnectivity,which
canbeinterpretedas44percentofallhouseholdsalreadyhavingarelativelyfast,stableand–intheiropinion–
suitableworkingtypeofbroadband
athome.Therefore,anybroadband
providerseekingtoattractthese
householdswithanewofferneedstobeabletoputforwardafullycomparablepropositioninallaspects.
Ontheotherhand,Figure1alsoshowsthat56percentofhouseholdstodayclaimthattheyeitherlackbroadbandconnectivityand/orarelesssatisfiedwiththeircurrentsolution.ThisindicatesgoodpotentialforFWAserviceproviderstocompeteona
largescaleforthesehouseholds.
FromanFWAperspective,
understandingtheoverallbroadbandinternetsatisfactionlevelsofhouseholdsinvariouscountries–anddifferent
areaswithinthesecountries–providesopportunitiestounderstandhowandwheretobestposition5GFWAofferingstocapturepotentialgrowth.

Lookingatthetypesofconnectivity
usedbyhouseholds,4in10householdsstatedthattheyrelyontetheringor
MiFiastheirmainconnectivitymediuminthehome.Thestudyhasnotedthatmobiletetheringismoreprevalentin
countriesintheearlystagesofbroadbanddeploymentwhilelesssoincountries
withwell-deployedbroadband
connectivity.InNigeria,forexample,
8in10householdsstatethatthey
mainlyrelyonmobile-centricconnectivityaccess,whiletheequivalentfigurein
Norwayis3in10households.
Factorstoconsiderinthisregardare
firstlyhouseholdsfeelingcomfortable
withwirelessandoptingtorelyontethering
toaccessconnectivity,andsecondly
householdshavingasenseoftrustinand
knowledgeofwirelesscapabilities.Both
factorspresentastandinfavorofFWA
asatechnologythatenablesfiber-like
speedsbutalsoasbeingacontributor
todigitalinclusion.

Onceproven,5GFWA
isbecomingthemain
connectivity
Householdsbelieve5GFWAachievesfiber-level
performanceandaremoresatisfiedwiththe
serviceexperiencethanforfiber.
Comparedtofiber,householdsweremoresatisfiedwith5GFWAintermsofserviceexperiencefactorssuchasdeliverytime,contractconditions,equipmentquality
andcostlevel.Fornetworkperformancefactors(speed,indoorcoverage,security
andcapacity)satisfactionamong
householdswith5GFWAwasonapar
withfiber.Therewasanotabledifferencewhencomparedtohouseholdsusing
4GFWA,inwhichsatisfactionexpressedwaslowerforboththeserviceandnetworkareasrelativeto5GFWAandfiber.
Differencesarealsoapparentbetweencountries,whicharedrivenbytheuniquehomebroadbandinternetmarketand
competitivesituation,aswellasthestageofthe5GFWAadoption.Withincountries,differencesinperceptionregarding
connectivityperformancecanbeseenmoremeaningfullyinthecontextofhouseholdlocations.
Householdsinruralareascanbe
seentohavethehighestsatisfactionrates,followedbythoselivinginmetropolitan
areas,whilehouseholdslivinginsmaller
citiesindicatethelowestrateofsatisfaction.Thesatisfactionsharedbyhouseholdsin
ruralareashighlightstheimportantrolethat5GFWAplaysasacontributortobridging
thedigitaldivide,bygivinghouseholdsthechancetoenjoyreliableconnectivitywithfiber-likespeeds.
5GFWAemergesastheleading
broadbandchoiceforhouseholds
AppreciationisincreasingamonghouseholdsthatareusingFWA,with7outof10
householdsusing5GFWAstatingthatit
hasbecometheirprimaryconnectivityinthehome.Figure2showshowthissentimentisreflectedacrosstheboardincountries
includedinthestudy,withthecurrentuptakeof5GFWAnotreplacingaspecifictypeofconnectivity,butratherreplacingalltypesofconnectivityinlinewiththeprevalenttypesavailableintherespectivemarkets.
Satisfactionlevelsexpressedby
households–andtheircommitmentto
FWAandtheenhancedcapabilitiesthat
5GFWAbrings–servetosupporttheviewFWAisaboosterforenhancedconnectivity,asitenableshouseholdstoenjoybetter
andmorereliableconnectivity,particularly
inless-connectedmarkets,butalso
inpoorly-connectedareaswithin
well-connectedmarkets.

A“needforspeed”isthekeydriverforhouseholdswhen
optingforanynewbroadbandconnectivity,andnaturally
thisalsoappliestoFWA.
WhilespeedisadriverforFWA,abarrieristheperceptionofhouseholdsthatwiredofferingsprovidegreaterconsistencyandstability,withoneinthreebelievingthatwiredissuperiortowirelessintermsof
speed.Thisindicatesaneedtoensure
speed-basedFWAofferings,giventhat
70percentofFWAofferingsinthemarketarestillbesteffort.LookingathouseholdawarenessofFWAglobally,halfofthe
householdssurveyeddidnotknowwhatFWAis,andone-quarterhadheardthetermbutwereunawareofanyproviders.
ThewidespreadlackofawarenessaboutFWAcapabilitiesasasolutionisnotable,with40percentofhouseholdssurveyed
statingtheyareunabletotakeaclearstandofwhetheritisbettertohaveFWAorfixedbroadband(wiredconnectivityimplied)
intermsofspeed,reliabilityanddata
capabilities.Thiscanbeseenin
Figure3.Interestingly,householdsin
mobile-centricmarketswithlimited
5GFWAhaveindicatedahigher
awarenessofFWAcomparedto
householdsinmarketswithwell-deployedfiberconnectivity.InIndia,1in3householdsareunawareofthebenefitsofFWA,while3in10areawareofFWA,butunaware
ofproviderssupplyingFWA.Asimilar
situationcanbeseeninIndonesia,wherehalfofthehouseholdsarenotawareofFWAasatechnology,while4in10areawareofFWAbut,again,areunaware
ofanyFWAproviders.
InNorway–amarketintheadvanced
stagestowardlarge-scale,speed-based
5GFWA–atotalof6in10householdsstatetheyarenotawareofFWAasatechnology,while1in4householdsareunawareof
FWAproviders.AsimilarpatterncanbeseeninJapan,where7in10areunawareofthetechnology,and4in10areawareofFWA
technology,butunawareofFWAproviders.
Evenifitisclearthathouseholdswantfastandreliablebroadband,thelack
ofawarenessandknowledgeofFWA
asasolutiontoaddresstheseneedsis
evident(therespondentsinthestudywerepresentedwithadefinitionandimagestodescribetheFWAservice).Majorreasonsforalackofawarenessinclude:
•FWAisstillanew/earlyoffering.
•5Gdeploymentsandcoveragearestillgrowing.
•50percentofFWAofferingsare5G-based.
•FWA-eligibleareas(andadvertising)arerestrictedto5Gcoverage/capacity.
•ConvergedserviceprovidersoftendomoretomasspromotefibercomparedtoFWA.

appealoftheconvenienceofFWAasasolution.ThisisshowninFigure4.
Easeofinstallationwashighlightedasacontributor,withaconsensusof50percentofhouseholdsstatinginstallationwas
uncomplicated.Abalancedapproachtoinstallationwasdescribed,withanevensplitinwhichhalfofhouseholdsoptedtodoitthemselvesandtheotherhalfreliedonexternalsupportfromtechnicians.
