Therehasbeendebateamongscientistsovertheliquidwaterinterpretationfromthe
radardataalone,withsomestudiessuggestingtheradarsignalisnotduetoliquid
water.
Theresultsprovidethefirstindependentlineofevidence,usingdataotherthan
radar,thatthereisliquidwaterbeneathMars*southpolaricecap.
“Thecombinationofthenewevidence,ourcomputermodelresults,andtheradar
datamakesitmuchmorelikelythatatleastoneareaofliquidwaterbeneaththeice
capexistsonMarstoday,andthatMarsmuststillbegeothermally(地热)activein
ordertokeepthewaterbeneaththeicecapliquid."saidProfessorNeilArnold,who
ledtheresearch.
LikeEarth,Marshasthickwatericecapsatbothpoles,roughlyequivalentin
combinedvolumetotheGreenlandIceSheet.UnlikeEarthrsicesheets,however,
