这一段出现了一个新的人物Tom，他决定一探究竟。

第一、Tom去学校“汇报”（散播）Fred的情况，Fred被阴阳怪气地嘲讽“Youareabraveonetostayathomewashingdishes.”

（注意：这里的Theyhad.brave学生要看得出来是一种讽刺的口吻，同时也为后文进行了铺垫，探讨什么是真正的'braveboy'）

第二、文章中描写到Fred会在妈妈睡着之后偷偷地哭。说明了第一他其实是在意同学们对他的这种嘲讽的（受到了伤害），第二他躲起来哭不希望妈妈为自己担心，再次证明了他是一个非常善良和孝顺的孩子。

第三、Tom家发生火灾，Fred毫无犹豫地冲了过去，说明他勇敢同时也是善良。

前文的矛盾其实几乎都集中在了这一段里边。

续写中这两个矛盾都得得到解决才行，所以很多同学在续写里面只着重强调了Fred去Tom家救火成为英雄是不全面的，Tom对Fred改观并去扭转关于Fred的语言暴力同时挽回他的形象，探讨真正男子汉的品质这样才算完整。所以这篇文章并不简简单单是一篇救灾的文章，也不仅仅是为了体现邻里间的互相帮助。
