QuickStartTutorial
Dipsisaprogramdesignedfortheinteractiveanalysisoforientationbasedgeologicaldata.ThisquickstarttutorialwillfamiliarizetheuserwithsomeofthebasicfeaturesofDips.
Ifyouhavenotalreadydoneso,runDipsbydouble-clickingontheDipsiconinyourinstallationfolder.OrfromtheStartmenu,selectPrograms^Rocscience^Dips^Dips.
Example.dipFile
InyourDipsinstallationfolderyouwillfindanExamplesfolder,containingseveralexampleDipsfiles.ThisQuickStarttutorialwillusetheExample.dipfileintheExamplesfolder.ToopentheExample.dipfile:

Convention
Asyoumovethecursoraroundthestereonet,noticethatthecursororientationcoordinatesaredisplayedintheStatusBar.
PolePlot
TheformatoftheseorientationcoordinatescanbetoggledwiththeConventionoptionintheSetupmenu.
IftheConventionisPoleVector,thecoordinateswillbeinTrend/Plungeformat,andrepresentthecursor(pole)locationdirectly.Thisisthedefaultsetting.

Strike/DipRight
IftheConventionisPlaneVector,thecoordinateswillcorrespondtotheGlobalOrientationFormatofthecurrentdocument(e.g.Dip/DipDirection,Strike/DipRight,Strike/DipLeft),andrepresentthePLANEcorrespondingtothecursor(pole)location.
TIP:thequickestandmostconvenientwayoftogglingtheConventionistoclickontheboxintheStatusBartotheleftofthecoordinatedisplay,withtheLEFTmousebutton.
TheConventionalsoaffectstheformatofcertaindatalistingsinDips(e.g.theMajorPlaneslegend,theEditPlanesandEditSetsdialogs),andtheformatoforientationdatainputforcertainoptions(e.g.AddPlaneandAddSetWindowdialogs).
NOTE:THECONVENTIONOPTIONDOESNOTAFFECTTHEPLOTTINGOFDATA,ORTHEVALUESINTHEGRIDINANYWAY!!PolesareALWAYSplottedusingtheTrendandPlungeofthepolevectorwithrespecttothereferencesphere,regardlessofthesettingoftheConventionoption.
Legend
NotethattheLegendforthePolePlot(andallstereonetplotsinDips)indicatesthe:
ProjectionType(EqualAngle)and
Hemisphere(LowerHemisphere).
ThesecanbechangedusingStereonetOptionsintheSetupmenu(EqualAreaandUpperHemisphereoptionscanbeused).However,forthistutorial,wewillusethedefaultprojectionoptions.
NotethattheLegendalsoindicates"61Poles,40Entries".
TheEXAMPLE.DIPfilehas40rows,hence"40entries".
TheQuantityColumninthisfileallowstheusertorecordmultipleidenticaldataunitsinasinglerowofthefile.Hencethe40dataentriesactuallyrepresent61features,hence"61poles".
Let'smoveontotheScatterPlot.
WhilethePolePlotillustratesorientationdata,singlepolesymbolsmayactuallyrepresentseveralunitmeasurementsofsimilarorientation.
SelecttheScatterPlotoptionfromthetoolbarortheViewmenu,togenerateaScatterPlot.

AScatterPlotallowstheusertobetterviewthenumericaldistributionofthesemeasurements,sincecoincidentpoleandcloselyneighbouringpolemeasurementsaregroupedtogetherwithquantitiesplottedsymbolically.TheScatterPlotLegendindicatesthenumberofpolesrepresentedbyeachsymbol.
ScatterPlot
ContourPlot
SelecttheContourPlotoptionfromthetoolbarortheViewmenu,andaContourPlotwillbegenerated.

Let'smoveontotheContourPlot,whichisthemaintoolforanalyzingpoleconcentrationsonastereonet.
TheContourPlotclearlyshowsthedataconcentrations.ItcanbeseenthattherearethreedataclustersintheEXAMPLE.DIPfile,includingonethatwrapsaroundtotheoppositesideofthestereonet.
Sincethisfileonlycontains40dataentries,thedataclusteringinthiscasewasapparentevenonthePolePlot.However,inlargerDipsfiles,whichmaycontainhundredsoreventhousandsofentries,clusterrecognitionwillnotnecessarilybevisibleonPoleorScatterPlots,andContourPlotsarenecessarytoidentifymajordataconcentrations.
WeightedContourPlot
SincethisfilecontainsTraverseinformation(Traversesarediscussedinthenexttutorial),aTerzaghiWeightingcanbeappliedtoContourPlots,tocorrectforsamplingbiasintroducedbydatacollectionalongTraverses
ToapplytheTerzaghiWeightingtotheContourPlot:

NotethechangeintheContourPlot.ApplyingtheTerzaghiWeightingmayrevealimportantdataconcentrationswhichwerenotapparentontheunweightedContourPlot.TheeffectofapplyingtheTerzaghiWeightingwillofcoursebedifferentforeachfile,andwilldependonthedatacollected,andthetraverseorientations.
DONOTUSEWEIGHTEDCONTOURPLOTSFORAPPLICATIONSUNLESSYOUAREFAMILIARWITHTHELIMITATIONS.ForadiscussionofsamplingbiasandtheTerzaghiWeightingprocedure,seetheDipsHelpsystem.
ToremovetheTerzaghiWeightingandrestoretheunweightedContourPlot,simplyre-selecttheTerzaghiWeightingoption.

ContourOptions
ManyContourOptionsareavailablewhichallowyoutocustomizethestyle,rangeandnumberofcontourintervals.WewillnotexploretheContourOptionsinthistutorial,however,youareencouragedtoexperiment.ContourOptionsisavailableintheSetupmenu,orbyright-clickingonaContourPlot.
StereonetOptions
Atthispoint,let'sexaminetheStereonetOptionsdialog,whichconfiguresthebasicstereonetparametersfortheContourPlotandallotherstereonetplotsinDips.
Right-clickontheContourPlotandselectStereonetOptions,orselectStereonetOptionsfromtheSetupmenu.

IfyouexaminetheContourPlotlegend,youwillnoticethatalloftheStereonetOptionsarerecordedhere,includingtheDistributionmethod(Fisherinthiscase)andtheCountCirclesize(1%inthiscase)usedtoobtainthecontours.SelectCanceltoreturntotheContourPlot.
SeetheStereonetOptionstopicintheDipsHelpsystem,forcompletedetailsaboutalloftheDipsStereonetoptions.
AnotherwidelyusedtechniqueforrepresentingorientationsistheRosettePlot.
Theconventionalrosetteplotbeginswithahorizontalplane(representedbytheequatorial(outer)circleoftheplot).Aradialhistogram(witharcsegmentsinsteadofbars)isoverlainonthiscircle,indicatingthedensityofplanesintersectingthishorizontalsurface.Theradialorientationlimits(azimuth)ofthearcsegmentscorrespondtotherangeofSTRIKEoftheplaneorgroupofplanesbeingrepresentedbythesegment.Inotherwords,therosettediagramisaradialhistogramofstrikedensityorfrequency.
TogenerateaRosettePlot,selectRosettePlotfromthetoolbarortheViewmenu.

AlthoughthedefaultRosettePlotusesahorizontalbaseplane,anarbitrarybaseplaneatanyorientationcanbespecifiedintheRosetteOptionsdialog.Foranon-horizontalbaseplane,theRosettePlotrepresentstheAPPARENTSTRIKEofthelinesofintersectionbetweenthebaseplaneandtheplanesintheDipsfile.

RosetteApplications
Therosetteconveyslessinformationthanafullstereonetsinceonedimensionisremovedfromthediagram.Incaseswheretheplanesbeingconsideredformessentiallytwodimensionalgeometry(prismaticwedges,forexample)thethirddimensionmayoftenovercomplicatetheproblem.Ahorizontalrosettediagrammay,forexample,assistinblastholedesignforaverticalbenchwhereverticaljointsetsimpactonfragmentation.Averticalrosetteorientedperpendiculartotheaxisofalongtopsillortunnelmaysimplifywedgesupportdesignwherethestructureparallelstheexcavation.Averticalrosettewhichcutsasectionthroughaslopeunderinvestigationcanbeusedtoperformquickslidingortopplinganalysiswherethestructurestrikesparalleltotheslopeface.
Fromavisualisationpointofviewandforconveyingstructuraldatatoindividualsunfamiliarwithstereographicprojection,rosettesmaybemoreappropriatewhenthestructuralnatureoftherockissimpleenoughtowarrant2Dtreatment.
WeightedRosettePlot
TheTerzaghiWeightingoptioncanbeappliedtoRosettePlotsaswellasContourPlots,toaccountforsamplingbiasintroducedbydatacollectionalongTraverses.
IftheTerzaghiWeightingisNOTapplied,thescaleoftheRosettePlotcorrespondstotheactual"numberofplanes"ineachbin.
IftheTerzaghiWeightingISapplied,thescaleoftheRosettePlotcorrespondstotheWEIGHTEDnumberofplanesineachbin.
Donotuseweightedplotsforapplicationsunlessyouarefamiliarwiththelimitations.SeetheDipsHelpsystemformoreinformation.
AddingaPlane
TheAddPlaneoptionallowstheusertographicallyaddapole/planetoastereonetplot(Pole,Scatter,ContourorMajorPlanesplots).
Firstlet'sswitchtheplottypebacktoaContourPlot,sinceplanescannotbeaddedontheRosettePlot.
Select:View^ContourPlot
NowselectAddPlanefromthetoolbarortheSelectmenu.
Select:Select^AddPlane
1.MovethecursorovertheContourPlot.WhenthecursorisINSIDEthestereonet,anarcor"greatcircle"representingtheplanecorrespondingtothecursorlocation(pole)willappear.Movethecursoraroundthestereonet,andobservethepositionofthecorrespondingplane.
Notethatthecursorcoordinatesarevisibleinthestatusbar.Whentheplane/poleisatadesiredorientation,clicktheLEFTmousebuttonINSIDEthestereonet.(RememberthatthecoordinateConventioncanbetoggledintheStatusBar).
TheAddPlanedialogwillappear,allowingyoutomodifythegraphicallyenteredorientation(ifnecessary),andalsoprovideID,labeling(optional)andvisibilityinformation.

Forthisexample,enterID=1,Label=plane1,andleavetheVisibilitycheckboxesattheirdefaultselections.SelectOK.
Theplane/polewillbedisplayedontheplot,accordingtothevisibilitysettingschosen,asshowninFigure7.
Ifthegraphicallyenteredorientationisnotcorrect,thensimplyenterthecorrectvaluesintheAddPlanedialog.
NOTE:thevisibilitysettingsthatyouchooseintheAddPlanedialogcanbemodifiedATANYLATERTIMEintheEditPlanesdialog.

CreatingSets
ASetasdefinedinDips,isagroupingofdatacreatedwiththeAddSetWindowoption.TheAddSetWindowoptionallowstheusertodrawwindowsarounddataclustersonastereonet,andobtainmeanorientationsofdata(poles)withinthewindows.
Beforewegofurther,notethefollowing:
ThewindowscreatedwithAddSetWindowarecurvilinearfour-sidedwindows,definedbytwotrendvaluesandtwoplungevaluesatoppositecorners.
ThewindowsarealwaysformedinaCLOCKWISEdirection,thereforeyoumustalwaysSTARTaSetWindowwithoneoftheCOUNTER-CLOCKWISEcorners.

Let'screateourfirstSetwiththesmalldataclusterattherightsideofthestereonet.
Select:Sets^AddSetWindow
LocatethecursoratAPPROXIMATELYTrend/Plunge=55/65,andclicktheLEFTmousebutton.RememberthatthecursorcoordinatesaredisplayedintheStatusBar.
MovethemouseinaCLOCKWISEdirection,andyouwillseeacurvilinear,four-sidedSetWindowopeningup.
MovethecursortoAPPROXIMATELYTrend/Plunge=115/20,andclicktheLEFTmousebutton.YouwillthenseetheAddSetWindowdialog.

4.Don'tworryifthewindowcoordinatesarenotexactlythoseshownabove,aslongasthewindowenclosesthedesireddata.However,youmayeditthecoordinatesatthistime,ifyouwish.
5.WewillacceptthedefaultSetIDandVisibilitysettings,sojustselectOK,andtheSetwillbecreated.

MeanPlaneDisplay
WhenaSetiscreated,youwillnoticethefollowingonthestereonet,asshowninFigure9:
TheSetWindowwillbedisplayed.
Themeanpole/planewillbedisplayedaccordingtothevisibilitysettingschosenintheAddSetWindowdialog.Inthiscase,wehavedisplayedtheUnweightedmeanpolevectorandplane.
Unweightedmeanpoles/planesareidentifiedbyan"m"besidetheSetID.Weightedmeanpoles/planes,ifdisplayed,areidentifiedbya"w"besidetheSetID.
StatusBarDisplay
AfteraSetiscreated,theStatusBarwilldisplaythenumberofpolesintheSet.Forthisexample,theStatusBarshouldnowshow:

The"8entries"referstothenumberofrowsofthegridwithintheSet.SincewehaveaQuantityColumninthisfile,eachrowcanrepresentmultipledataunits(poles).Inthiscase,the8rowsactuallyrepresent10poles.
SetColumn
WhentheFIRSTSetiscreated,aSetColumnisautomaticallyaddedtotheGrid.TheSetColumnrecordstheSetIDofdatabelongingtoSets.Let'sverifythis.
ReturntotheGridView(youmayselectfromthelistofopenviewsintheWindowmenu).
NoticetheSetColumn,whichappearsAFTERtheTraverseColumn.
NoticethedataintheSetColumnwhichisflaggedwiththeSetID=1.ThesearethepoleswithintheSetWindowjustcreated.

AwrappedSetWindowinDipsautomaticallycalculatesthecorrectmeanvectorforSetswhichcrosstheequator.

NowreturntotheContourPlotview,andwewillcreateanotherSet,thistimewithawindowwhichwrapsaroundtheperimeterofthestereonet.
WrappedSetWindows
AfteryouhaveselectedtheFIRSTcornerofaSetWindowwiththeAddSetWindowoption,youwillnoticethatifthecursormovesbeyondthestereonetperimeter,itwill"wraparound"andre-appearontheoppositesideofthestereonet,withthewindowstillattached.
ASetColumnisautomaticallyaddedtotheGridwhentheFIRSTSetiscreated.
Thisallowsdataneartheperimeter,onoppositesidesofthestereonet,tobeselectedasoneSet,asillustratedinFigure10.
ThisusefulfeatureofDipsautomaticallycalculatesthecorrectmeanvectorforSetswithpolesplottingonoppositesidesoftheequator,sinceAMEANORIENTATIONCALCULATEDFROMTHELOWERHEMISPHEREALONEWILLBEINCORRECT!!
ThepoleswithinawrappedSetwindowthatplotontheoppositesideofthestereonet,areincorporatedintothevectoradditionASNEGATIVEpoles(i.e.plunge=—plunge,trend=trend+180),sothatthemeanwillbecorrectlycalculated.
Let'screateasecondSetusingawrappedSetWindow.Select:Sets^AddSetWindow
LocatethecursoratAPPROXIMATELYTrend/Plunge=300/20,andclicktheLEFTmousebutton.RememberthatthecursorcoordinatesaredisplayedintheStatusBar.
Movethecursortothestereonetperimeter,andyouwillseethattheSetWindowreappearsontheoppositesideofthestereonet.

5.Don'tworryifthewindowcoordinatesarenotexactlythoseshownabove,aslongasthewindowenclosesthedesireddata.However,youmayeditthecoordinatesatthistime,ifyouwish.
6.WewillacceptthedefaultSetID(2inthiscase)andVisibilitysettings,sojustselectOK,andtheSetwillbecreated.

Inthedrop-downlist,selectthecolumnyouwouldliketoplot.Forexample,selectTYPE.
