competitortooureconomicmodeI.WithoutthisinternationaIcompetition,weno
IongerhadtoshowthatoursystemcouIddeIiverformostofourcitizens.

thecollapseoftheSovietsystemin1991.ThependuIumswungfrommuchtoomuch

countrieswheretheIifeprospectsoftheyoungaremostsharpIydeterminedbythe
incomeandeducationoftheirparents?

thefrustrationsoftheyoung,whoIongtoenterourshrinkingmiddlecIass.Soaring
tuitionsanddeciiningincomeshaveresultedinlargerdebtburdens.Thosewithonly
ahighschooldipIomahaveseentheirincomesdeciineby13percentoverthepast
35years.
[M]Wherejusticeisconcerned,thereisaIsoahugedivide.Intheeyesofthe
restoftheworIdandasignificantpartofitsownpopuIation,massimprisonment
