As5Gadoptiongrows,themonetisationimperativewillescalate.GSMAIntelligenceresearchshows

thatthemobileARPUtrendintheUSandCanada

improvedinthe12monthsafterlaunching5G.

Thetechnologyisalsohavingapositiveimpact

onrevenuegrowthforNorthAmericanoperators

beyondmobileservices,ashighlightedbyfixed

wirelessaccess(FWA)momentumintheregion.

Lookingforward,theenterprisesectorisexpectedtobethemaingrowthdriverforoperators.5GSA

bringsahostofnewcapabilitiesthatwillbecrucialtomonetising5Ginvestments,includingimprovedsupportfornetworkslicing.Therearealsosynergiesbetween5GSAandprivatewirelessnetworks,

openingupnewopportunitiesformobileoperators.

GenerativeAItakescentrestage

MobileoperatorshaveutilisedAIforawhilenowtovaryingdegrees.However,theemergence

ofgenerativeAIhaspushedtheenvelopeonAI

capabilitiesandthrustAItechnologyintoboardroomconversationsglobally.WithgenerativeAItools,

operatorscanattempttoautomatemorecomplexcustomerservicefunctionsthatrequireabetter

understandingofcontext,improvedabilityto

followaconversationandadvancedsynthesisof

information.Thetechnologycanalsobeusedto

improvenetworkoperationsanddeliverpersonalisedserviceplans.However,ethicalconcernsaroundthetechnologystillneedtobeaddressed.AIregulationwillthereforecontinuetomoveupthepolicyagendaasgovernmentsdevelopframeworksforregulatingtheuseofnewAItools.

eSIMmomentumbuilds

ThelastfewyearshavebeencrucialforeSIM

developmentandcommercialisation,highlighted

byApple’slaunchofeSIM-onlysmartphonesin

September2022intheUSandCanada.There

hassincebeenanaccelerationinoperatoreSIM

deploymentsandcommerciallaunches.However,eSIMawarenessamongconsumersremainslimited.

Asthemaincontactpointswithendusers,operatorsandsmartphonemanufacturershaveakeyrole

toplayinacceleratingconsumerawarenessand

adoption.Additionally,eSIMtechnologyhaslong

beenseenasamajorenablerandacceleratorofIoTdeploymentsacrossmultiplesectors.Thishasled

NorthAmericanoperatorstopartnerwitharangeofplayersacrosstheIoTecosystemtoaccelerateeSIMadoptionintheregion.

Theshifttowardscircularitygainstraction

Theconceptofcircularityhasrisenuptheagendaforpolicymakersandindustryplayersinlight

ofgrowingconcernsaroundthegenerationof

e-wasteandunsustainablelevelsofconsumptionofnaturalresources.Althoughthetechnicallifespanofamobiledeviceisnowbetweenfourandsevenyears,theaverageuseperiodofmobiledevices

isonlyaroundthreeyears.Governmentsand

industryplayershavearoletoplayinincentivisingconsumers,suchasbybuildingnewchannelsforsupplierstocollect,refurbishandreselldevices

andimplementingawarenesscampaignson

sustainability.Operatorsandotherecosystem

playersinNorthAmericaarealreadytakinga

leadinthisregard,withanumberofinitiativestodrivecircularityinmobilephonesandotherdigitaldevices.

Growingopportunitiesforoperatorsasfintechdemandsurges

GSMAIntelligencesurveydatashowsthatbetween2020and2022,theshareof4G/5Gsmartphone

usersintheUSusingtheirdevicesforfinancial

servicesonadailybasisgrewbyfourpercentage

pointsonaverageacrossmobilebanking,online

shopping,payingbillsandcontactlesspayments.

Thisreflectsgrowingmomentumbehinddigital

financialservicesasthecompetitionheatsupin

thefintechmarket.Forexample,Applerecently

announcedthelaunchofabuynow,paylater

(BNPL)service,whichshouldcontributetoaboostine-commercetransactions.Ithasalsolaunchedahigh-yieldsavingsaccountthroughapartnership

withGoldmanSachs,whichreportedlybroughtin$990millionindepositsoveritsfirstfourdays.Bytheendofthefirstweek,around240,000accountshadreportedlybeenopened.

Accesstomorelow-bandspectrum(470–694

MHz)isontheWRCagendaforcountriesin

Europe,theMiddleEastandAfrica,whichcan

widenharmonisationofexistinglowbandsinNorthAmerica.Thefutureofmid-bandspectrumisalso

ontheagenda.Thereisanopportunitytoexpand

theharmonisationof3.3–3.8GHz,while4.80–4.99GHzisalsobeingconsideredasawayofprovidingadditionalmid-bandcapacity.Furthermore,many

partsoftheworldwilluse6GHzfor5GfollowingonfromWRC-23.
