TheUnitedStatesDeclarationofIndependenceisastatementadoptedbytheContinentalCongressonJuly4,1776,whichannouncedthatthethirteenAmericancoloniesthenatwarwithGreatBritainwerenowindependentstates,andthusnolongerapartoftheBritishEmpire.WrittenprimarilybyThomasJefferson,theDeclarationisaformalexplanationofwhyCongresshadvotedonJuly2todeclareindependencefromGreatBritain,morethanayearaftertheoutbreakoftheAmericanRevolutionaryWar.ThebirthdayoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica—IndependenceDay—iscelebratedonJuly4,thedaythewordingoftheDeclarationwasapprovedbyCongress.DeclarationofIndependenceThomasJefferson,mainauthoroftheDeclarationofIndependenceDeclarationofIndependenceWeholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertain

unalienablerights,thattheyareamongthesearelife,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness.Thattosecuretheserights,governmentsareinstitutedamongthem,
