Byherexamplesheinspiredotherwomentoplayafullerroleinsociety:itwasunusualforwomentohaveavoiceoutsidethehome.ItwasalsounusualforaQuakertobesoprominent,becauseatthattimetheQuakermovementwasgoingthrougha'quietist'phase,andwasveryinwardlooking.In1780ElizabethGurneywasborninNorwichintoarichQuakerfamily.Elizabethwaswelleducated,whichwasunusualforagirlinthosedays.Shehelpedhermotherwhenshevisitedthepoorandsick.Later,althoughElizabethhad11children,shecontinuedtodohercharitywork.ShefirstvisitedNewgatePrisonin1813andwashorrifiedbywhatshesaw.Therewereover300womenandchildrencrowdedintoaverysmallspace.Elizabethreturnedwithwarmclothingandstrawforthesickwomenandchildren.Prisonershadtopayforeverythingingaol(监狱).Therewerenotoilets,justabucketinthecorner,andlittledrinkingwater.Childrenweresenttoprisonforstealingbread,woolorfordamagingtrees.Punishmentsforrichpeoplewereverydifferentfromthoseforpoorpeople.In1817ElizabethorganisedagrouptohelpfemaleprisonersatNewgateprison.Sheprovideditemsforthewomensotheycouldsew,knitandmakegoodstosell.Shestartedaprisonschoolforthechildrentogivethemsomethingtodo.In1818ElizabethwasaskedtospeaktopeopleinParliamentabouttheprisons.The1823GaolActwaspassedbyParliament,andsomeimprovementsweremade.ElizabethvisitedprisonsalloverBritainandarguedforimprovements.Shewroteabookaboutprisonconditions.ShehelpedimproveconditionsonprisonshipstravellingtoAustralia.Prisonerswerenolongerchainedtothedecksduringthevoyage.ElizabethFryalsosetupatrainingcoursefornurses.ElizabethFrycontinuedtohelpothersuntilshediedon12October1845.ElizabethFry
