VANGOGHVINCENTVANGOGH1853-1890OntheveryrareoccasionsthatapaintingbyVincentvanGoghisputupforsale,theworkinvariablysellsformillionsofdollars.Hispaintingshaveshatteredauctionrecordsaroundtheworld-allthemoreironic,andcravedthecompanyofotherartists.Inhislifetimehepaintedabout870paintings-theexactnumberisunknownbecauseanumberofworksattributedtohimaredisputedandanumberwerelostordestroyedinhislifetime.Interestingly,vanGoghonlysignedpaintingsthatheconsideredwerefinished,somanypaintingsdonotbearhisflourishing"Vincent"signature.VanGoghthoughtandcareddeeplythen,thathelivedalifeofgrindingpoverty.Indeed,itisthoughtthatheonlysoldonepaintinginhisentirelife-thoughhedidgivemanyawaytohisfriendsandadmirers.Hispsychologicalproblemsanddeepunhappinessinformhisabouthisartandrepeatedlyattackedpaintings,yettheyarenotpicturesofartisticproblemsuntilhearrivedatagloomanddespair.VanGoghpaintedsatisfactoryconclusion.However,hesunshineandcolorandlifeinallitshasbeenaccusedofactivelyembracingvibrantmanifestations.theroleofmadgeniusandtorturedInhisearlyworksVincentonlyshowedartisticsoultosuchanextentthatheflashesofhistalentashecopiedtheworkdeliberatelyencouragedboutsofinsanityofotherartists.Itwasnotuntilhemovedtoaddtohisartisticcredentials.firsttoParisandthenthesouthofFranceVincentlovedpaintingoutdoorswherethathisstartlingoriginalityburstthroughhecouldfeelNatureandfelthisfunctionontohiscanvasesinpaintingsofwastoshowtheprocessofcreation.Theuninhibitedexuberance.seasonsarefundamentaltohispaintings-VincentvanGogh'sstrikinglygauntthereisfrequentlyanindicationofthefeaturesareeasilyrecognizablefromhismanyself-portraits-over40.Hisshortredhairandbeard,prominentnose,andstaring,unflinching,greeneyesappeartocarryanintrospective,self-composedlook,asifchallenginganddaringtheonlookertounderstandhim.Helongedtoberecognizedandacceptedasanartisttimeofyearinhiswork.VincentWillemvanGoghwasdescendedfromalonglineofDutchReformChurchpastors.HewasbornthefirstofsixchildrenonMarch30,1853,toTheodorusandAnna.TheylivedhappilyinthevicarageatGrootZundertnear

VANGOGHBreda,inBrabantwheretheylivedasafe,pious,modest,hardworking,respectablemiddle-classlife.Inlateryearshewouldlookbackonthistimewithgreatnostalgiaandaffection.Aswellasthechurch,theothervanGoghfamilybusinesswasart-threeofhisuncleswereartdealers.In1869,atage16,VincentbecameanapprenticeatTheHaguebranchofGoupilεtCie,oneoftheleadingartdealersinEurope.In1873hisbrotherTheo,fouryearshisjunior,alsojoinedthefirm.thatVincent'sstateofmindiswelldocumented.TheowasVincent'sanchor-hereliedonhimutterly,valuedhisopinions,andinshort,idolizedhim.Hewrotetohimbutalsopaintedforhim;indeed,hesawTheoasbeingaco-creatorinhispaintings.Inabout1873Vincentwasrejectedinloveandthisseemstobetheturningpointforhismania;hebecameisolatedandtaciturn,andstartedtoreadtheBibleobsessively.HisfamilybecameincreasinglyworriedbytheunsettlingtoneofhislettersandarrangedforhistransfertotheParisbranchofGoupil'sThanksinparttohisreligiousfanaticism,thetransferwasnotasuccessandthecompanydismissedhimAsarewardforhishardworkVincentwastransferredtotheLondonbranchinsummer1873.Butalongwayfromhisfamilyhisacutelonelinessprovokedwhatwouldbecomealife-longstruggleagainstmelancholyanddepression.DuringthisperiodVincentstartedaregularcorrespondencewithTheo,whokeptover800ofhislettersensuringByspring1877VincenthaddecidedtobecomeaclergymanandmovedtoAmsterdamwherehestudiedLatin,

VANGOGHGreek,andmathematics.Buthegaveupwhenitbecameobviousthathewouldfailhisexaminations.ImmersedinpietyheidentifiedwithStPaulandrejectedworldlypreoccupations.Hispersonalhygienesufferedandhelookedincreasinglyunkemptanddisreputable.Hisfamilydespairedofhim:hisfathertookhimhomemanytimestotrytocalmhimdownwiththepeaceandquietofhomelife,buttheeffectswereatbestonlytemporary.Academy.Whiletherehepracticeddrawingexercisesandcopiedwell-knownpaintingstoimprovehistechnique.Hisrelievedfamilygenerallyapproved,andallowedhimtomovebackhome.Buthewasimpossibletolivewith,hisfatherdespairedofhim,andhewasaskedtoleave.Hehadfallendesperatelyinlovewithhisrecentlywidowedcousin,Kee.SheandthefamilywerehorrifiedathisprotestationsoflovewhichweresoFinally,thefamilyagreedthatVincentimproperinsuchaveryconventionalandshouldtrylaypreaching,andhewasmoralenvironment.AterriblefamilysenttotheBorinage,adesperatelypoorargumentonChristmasDay1881resultedBelgianminingdistrict:VincentwasinVincentleavinghomeandmovingtothrilledattheprospect.Whilethere,heTheHague.livedthelifeofanascetic-hisfoodbreadStillayoungandinexperiencedpainterandwater;hishome,anear—derelictVincent'searlyworkwasconventional-hut.Hegaveawaymostofhisclothesoftenstilllivesofrusticsimplicityandtoneedyminersandgenerallyalarmedrathersombercolors.HelefttheBrusselshissuperiorssomuchwithhisreligiousAcademyandbegantoselfteachthroughenthusiasmthattheEvangelicaltheuseofartinstructionbooks.HealsoCommitteedeclinedtorenewhiscontract.enjoyedcopyingillustrations,particularlyHowever,andperhapsmoreimportantlytheagriculturalcompositionsoftohim,Vincentwasacceptedbytheminersandtheirfamilies.Vincenthimselfrecognizedthathewasnotsuitedtolaypreachinganddecidedtodedicatehimselftoartinstead.HemovedtoBrussels(withwhatwastobecomeregularfinancialhelpfromTheo)tostudyartatthenon-feepayingBrusselsromanticsocialrealismbyJean-FrangoisMilletandJulesBreton.CravingfemininecompanyVincentbecameattachedtoa30-yearoldprostitutecalledSien(ClasinaMariaHoomik)Condemnedasafallenwomanbysociety,shewelcomedhissupportasshehadayoungdaughterandwasexpectinganotherbaby.

VANGOGHItseemsthatVincentwasattractedtoherbytheverythingsthatalienatedherfromsociety-hersuffering,herprofession,herpoverty,evenhersmallpox-ravagedface.Hisfamilywereoutragedbuthewascontent,althoughtheyhadnoincomeexceptTheo'smonthlyallowance,sinceVincentsucceededinstoppingSienworkingthestreetswhilehepainted-oftenfromdawn
