Althoughasignificantnumberofpeople(32%)gave‘other’reasonsordidnotgiveareasonwhytheyemigrated,thisaccountedforonly17%withregardstoimmigration.173Thetable1.showstheamountofhouseholdethatfivecountriesinEuropespendpermonthonfouritems.Overall,2.itisevidentthatallfivecountriesspendthemajorityoftheireonfoodanddrinkandhousing,but3.muchlessonclothingandentertainment.Housingis4.thelargestexpenditureitemforFrance,GermanyandtheUK,withallofthemspendingaroundonethirdoftheireonthis,at30%,33%and37%,5.respectively.Incontrast,theyspendaround6.aquarteronfoodanddrink.7.However,thispatternisreversedforTurkeyandSpain,whospendaroundafifthoftheireonhousing,butapproxima yonethirdonfoodanddrink.Allfivecountriesspendmuchlesson8.theremainingtwoitems.Regardingclothing,FranceandSpainspendtheleast,atlessthan10%,9.whiletheotherthreecountriesspendaroundthesameamount,10.rangingbetween12%and15%.At19%,Germanyspendsthemostonentertainment,whereasUKandTurkeyspend yhalfthisamount,withFranceandSpainbetweenThetableusesfoureconomicindicatorstoshowthestandardoflivinginfiveselectedcountriesin1982.Overall,itcanbeseenthatthequalityoflifeintheUSAwasfarhigherthantheotherfourcountries.Tobegin,theUSA,whichisadevelopedcountry,hadthehighestGNPat13,160dollarsperhead.Italsohadamuchhigherdailycalorieintakeandlifeexpectancy,andthelowestrateofinfantmortality.Theother
