Whydohuman,quitedifferentfromtheotheranimalspecies,displayadistinctleftor

right-handedness?Notevenourclosestrelativesamongtheapes(猿)possesssuchdecidedlateral

populationthathaseverlivedappearstohavebeenright-handed.ProfessorBryanTurnerat

DeakinUniversityhasstudiedtheresearchliteratureonleft-handednessandfoundthat

handednessgoeswithsidedness.Sonineoutoftenpeopleareright-handedandeightare

right-footed.Henotedthatthisdistinctiveasymmetryinthehumanpopulationisitselfsystematic.

“Humansareabletothinkaboutthingsincategories;blackandwhite,upanddown,leftandright.

It'sasystemofsignsthatenablesustocategorizephenomenathatareessentiallyambiguous.^^

TheGeneticorInheritedElement

Researchhasshownthatthereisgeneticorinherited(继承的)elementtohandedness.But

whileleft-handednesstendstoappearinfamilies,neitherleftnorrighthanderswillautomatically

producechildrenwiththesamehandedness;infactabout6percentofchildrenwithtwo

right-handedparentswillbeleft-handed.However,amongtwoleft-handedparents,perhaps40per

centofthechildrenwillalsobeleft-handed.Withonerightandoneleft-handedparent,15to20

percentofthechildrenwillbeleft-handed.Evenamongidenticaltwinswhohaveexactlythe

samegenes,oneinsixpairswilldifferintheirhandedness.

ResearchersTurningtotheBrain

Whatthenmakespeopleleft-handedifitisnotsimplybecauseofgeneticcause?Other

factorsmustbeatworkandresearchershaveturnedtothebrainforclues.Inthe1860stheFrench

surgeonandanthropologist(人类学家),DrPaulBroca,madetheremarkablefindingthatpatients

whohadlosttheirpowersofspeechasaresultofastroke(abloodclotinthebrain)hadparalysis

(瘫痪)oftherighthalfoftheirbody.Henotedthatsincethelefthemisphere(半球)ofthebrain

controlstherighthalfofthebody,andviceversa,thebraindamagemusthavebeeninthebrain's

lefthemisphere.Psychologistsnowbelievethatamongright-handedpeople,probably95percent

havetheirlanguagecentreinthelefthemisphere,while5percenthaveright-sidedlanguage.

Left-handers,however,donotshowthereversepatternbutinsteadamajorityalsohavetheir

languagecentreinthelefthemisphere.Some30percenthaverighthemispherelanguage.

TheEvolutionofSpeechWentwithRight-handedPreference

DrBrinkman,abrainresearcherattheAustralianNationalUniversityinCanberra,has

suggestedthatevolutionofspeechwentwithright-handedpreference.AccordingtoBrinkman,as

thebrainevolved,onesidebecamespecializedfbrfinecontrolofmovement(necessaryfor

producingspeech)andalongwiththisevolutioncameright-handedpreference.Accordingto

Brinkman,mostleft-handershavelefthemispheredominancebutalsosomecapacityintheright

hemisphere.Shehasobservedthatifaleft-handedpersonisbrain-damagedinthelefthemisphere,

therecoveryofspeechisquiteoftenbetterthanaright-handedoneis.Andthisisexplainedbythe

factthatleft-handershavemorecapacityforspeechfunctionintherighthemisphere.Inher

studiesofmacaquemonkeys(短尾猴)Brinkmanhasnoticedthatprimates(monkeys)seemto

learnahandpreferencefromtheirmotherinthefirstyearoflifebutthiscouldbeonehandorthe

other.Inhumans,however,thespecializationinfunctionofthetwohemispheresresultsin

differencesinthestructureofhumanbrain;areasthatareinvolvedwiththeproductionofspeech

areusuallylargerontheleftsidethanontheright.Sincemonkeyshavenotacquiredthecapacity

fbrspeech,onewouldnotexpecttoseesuchadifference,butBrinkmanclaimstohavediscovered

atrendinmonkeystowardstheasymmetrythatisclearlyobservedinthehumanbrain.

DevelopmentoftheBrainMayLeadtoHandedness

TwoAmericanresearchers,GeschwindandGalaburda,studiedthebrainsofhumanand

discoveredthatthedifferencebetweenleftandrightasymmetryexistsbeforebirth.Butasthe

braindevelops,anumberofthingscanaffectit.Everybrainisinitiallyfemaleinitsorganization

anditonlybecomesamalebrainwhenthemalefetus(胎儿)beginstoproducehormones(荷尔

蒙).GeschwindandGalburdaknewthatdifferentpartsofthebrainmatureatdifferentrates;the

righthemispheredevelopsfirst,thentheleft.Moreover,agirl'sbraindevelopssomewhatfaster

thanthatofaboy.So,ifsomethinghappenstothebrain'sdevelopmentduringpregnancy,itis

morelikelytobeaffectedinamaleandthehemispheremorelikelytobeinvolvedistheleft.The

brainmaybecomelessdifferentandthisinturncouldresultinleft-handednessandthe

developmentofcertainsuperiorskillsthathavetheiroriginsinthelefthemispheresuchaslogic,

rationallyandabstraction.Itshouldbenosurprisethenthatamongmathematicsandarchitects,

left-handerstendtobemorecommonandtherearemoreleft-handedmalesthanfemales.

PrejudiceagainstLeft-handedPeople

Theresultsofthisresearchmaybesomeconsolation(安慰)toleft-handerswhohavefor

centurieslivedinaworldthatisdesignedtosuitright-handedpeople.However,whatisalarming,

accordingtoMr.CharlesMoore,awriterandjournalist,isthewaytheword“right“reinforcesits

ownadvantages.

UsingtheMindtoFightDiseases

Psychologyhasanewapplicationinthefieldofmedicine.Manydoctors,togetherwiththeir

patients,arelookingforalternativemethodsoftreatmentofphysicalproblems.Inlargehospitals

andresearchcenters,modernmethodsoftherapyseemtofocusonthephysicaldiseasewithout

consideringthepatient'smentalstate.Patientsmayfeelthattheyarebeingtreatedimpersonally,

likebrokenmachines.Somedoctorshaverecognizedthisasaproblem.Theyarenowusing

psychologicaltherapywithpatientstousetheirownmindstofighttheirdiseases.Becausethe

patientisworkingwiththemedicineandthedoctorsagainstthedisease,hisorherattitude

changes.Thepatientdoesnotwaitforthemedicineandtreatmenttocurehimorher,butinstead

thepatientjoinsinthefight.

Mentaltherapy

Thedoctorknowsthatadiseaseaffectsapatient'sbodyphysically.Thebodyofthepatient

(inthiscase,aman)changesbecauseofthedisease.Heisnotonlyphysicallyaffected,butasthe

physicianknows,healsohasanemotionalresponsetothedisease.Becausehismindisaffected,

hisattitudeandbehaviorchange.Themedicaltreatmentmightcurethepatient'sphysical

problems,butthepatient'smindmustfighttheemotionalones.Forexample,thestudiesofone

doctor,CarlSimonton,M.D.,haveshownthatatypicalcancerpatient(inthiscase,awoman)has

predictableattitudes.Shetypicallyfeelsdepressed,upset,andangry.Herself-imageispoorand

shefeelsself-pity.Asaresult,herbehaviorchanges.Becauseofherconstantdepression,sheacts

unfriendlytowardherfamily,friends,doctors,andnurses.Suchattitudesandbehaviorsprevent

thepatientfromgettingwell.Therefore,adoctor'streatmentmusthelpthepatientchangeher

attitudes.Simonton'smethodemphasizestreatmentofthewholepatientbytreatingboththebody

andthemind.

Theattitudeofacancerpatientwhoisreceivingradiationtherapy,anX-raytreatment,can

becomemorepositive.ThephysicianwhoisfollowingSimonton'spsychologicaltreatmentplan

suggeststhatthepatientimaginethatheorshecanseethetumor(肿瘤)inthebody.Inthemental

picture,thepatient"sees"apowerfulbeamofradiationlikeamillionbulletsofenergy.The

patientimaginesthebeamhittingthetumorcellsandcausingthemtoshrink.Foranothercancer

patient,Dr.Simontonmightmakeanothersuggestion.Thispatient,withadifferentkindofcancer,

needstotakecapsulesandpillsseveraltimesaday.Thedoctorasksthepatienttoimaginethe

medicinegoingfromthestomachintothebloodstreamandtothecancerceils.Thepatient

imaginesthatthemedicineislikeanarmyfightingthediseasedcellsandseesthecancercells

graduallydying.Hisorherbloodcarriesawaythedeadcells.Boththemedicaltherapyandthe

patient'spositiveattitudefightthedisease.

Doctorsarenotcertainwhythismentaltherapyworks.However,thisuseofpsychologydoes

helpsomepatientsbecausetheirattitudesaboutthemselveschange.Theybecomemoreconfident

becausetheyusethepowerwithintheirownmindstohelpstopthedisease.

Suggestiontherapy

Anotherapplicationofusingthemindtohelpcurediseaseistheuseofsuggestiontherapy.

Beforemakingthesuggestion,thedoctorhelpsthepatientstoconcentratedeeply.Thepatient(in

thiscase,aman)thinksonlyaboutonething.Hebecomessounawareofotherthingsaroundhim

thatheseemstobeasleep.Heissaidtobeintrance(昏睡).Thenthephysicianmakes”a

suggestion“tothepatientaboutthemedicalproblem.Thepatient'smindrespondstothe

suggestionevenafterthepatientisnolongerinthetrance.Inthisway,thepatientuseshismindto

helphisbodyrespondtotreatment.

Suggestiontherapyhelpfulforbothadultsandchildren

Doctorshavelearnedthatthisuseofpsychologyishelpfulforbothadultsandchildren.For

example,physicianshaveusedsuggestiontohelpadultsdealwiththestrongpainofsome

diseases.Furthermore,sometimestheadultpatient(inthiscase,awoman)worriesabouther

illnesssomuchthattheanxietykeepsherfromgettingwell.Therightsuggestionmayhelpthe

patienttostopbeinganxious.Suchtreatmentmayhelpthepatientwithachronicdisease.Asthma

(哮喘)isanexampleofachronicdisorder.Asthmaisadiseasethatcausesthepatienttohave

difficultyinbreathing.Thepatientstartstocoughandsometimeshastofighttogettheairthathe

orsheneeds.Psychologycanhelprelievethesymptomsofthisdisorder.Aftersuggestiontherapy,

theasthmapatientbreathesmoreeasily.

Physicianshavelearnedthatthepsychologicalmethodisveryusefulintreatingchildren.

Childrenrespondquicklytothetreatmentbecausetheyarefascinatedbyit.Forexample,Dr.

DavidR.Collisonhasworkedwith121asthmaticchildreninSydney,Australia,andhadgood

results.Twenty-fiveofthechildrenhadexcellentresults.Theywereabletobreathemoreeasily,

andtheydidnotneedmedication.Anotherforty-threewerealsohelped.Thesymptomsofthe

asthmaoccurredlessfrequently,andwhentheydid,theywerenotasstrong.Mostofthechildren

alsofeltbetteraboutthemselves.Doctorshavealsousedsuggestiontochangehabitslike

nail-biting,thumb-suckingandsleep-relatedproblems.

GeothermalheatoriginatesfromEarth's(炽热的)consolidationofdustandgasover4

billionyearsago.Atearth'score-4,000milesdeep-temperaturemayreachover9,000degrees

HowdoesgeothermalheatgetuptoEarth'ssurface?

Theheatfromtheearth'scorecontinuouslyflowsoutward.Ittransfers(conducts)tothe

surroundinglayerofrock,themantle(地幔).Whentemperatureandpressuresbecomehigh

enough,somemantlerockmelts,becomingmagma(岩浆).Then,becauseitislighter(lessdense)

Howhavepeopleusedgeothermalenergyinthepast?

Fromearliesttimes,peoplehaveusedgeothermalwaterthatflowedfreelyfromtheearth's

comfortingwarmwaters.Buteventually,this“magicwater“wasused(andstillis)inother

atPompeii,toheatbuildings.Asearlyas10,000yearsago,NativeAmericansusedhotsprings

waterforcookingandmedicine.ForcenturiestheMaorisofNewZealandhavecooked

geothermalwater.

Howdoweusegeothermalenergytoday?

Todaywedrillwellsintothegeothermalreservoirstobringthehotwatertothesurface.

Geologists,geochemists,drillersandengineersdoalotofexploringandtestingtolocate

undergroundareasthatcontainthisgeothermalwater,sowe'llknowwheretodrillgeothermal

productionwells.Then,oncethehotwaterand/orsteamtravelsupthewellstothesurface,they

canbeusedtogenerateelectricityingeothermalpowerplantsorforenergysavingnon-electrical

purposes.

Whataresomeoftheadvantagesofusinggeothermalenergytogenerateelectricity?

Clean.Geothermalpowerplants,likewindandsolarpowerplants,donothavetoburnfuels

tomanufacturesteamtoturntheturbines(涡车仑机).Generatingelectricitywithgeothermalenergy

helpstoconservenonrenewablefossilfuels,andbydecreasingtheuseofthesefuels,wereduce

emissionsthatharmouratmosphere.Thereisnosmokyairaroundgeothermalpowerplants-in

factsomearebuiltinthemiddleoffarmcropsandforests,andsharelandwithcattleandlocal

wildlife.

Fortenyears,LakeCountyCalifornia,hometofivegeothermalelectricpowerplants,has

beenthefirstandonlycountrytomeetthemoststrictgovernmentalairqualitystandardsinthe

U.S.

Easyontheland.Thelandarearequiredforgeothermalpowerplantsissmallerper

megawattthanforalmosteveryothertypeofpowerplant.Geothermalinstallationsdon'trequire

dammingofriversorharvestingofforests-andtherearenomineshafts,tunnels,openpits,waste

heapsoroilspills.

Reliable.Geothermalpowerplantsaredesignedtorun24hoursaday,allyear.Ageothermal

powerplantsitsrightontopofitsfuelsource.Itisresistanttointerruptionsofpowergeneration

duetoweather,naturaldisastersorpoliticalriftsthatcaninterrupttransportationoffuels.

Flexible.Geothermalpowerplantscanhavemodular(模块(Kj)designs,withadditionalunits

installedinincrements(增额)whenneededtofitgrowingdemandfbrelectricity.

KeepsDollarsatHome.Moneydoesnothavetobeexportedtoimportfuelforgeothermal

powerplants.Geothermal“fuel”-likethesunandthewind-isalwayswherethepowerplantis;

economicbenefitsremainintheregionandtherearenofuelpriceshocks.

HelpsDevelopingCountriesGrow.Geothermalprojectscanofferalloftheabovebenefitsto

helpdevelopingcountriesgrowwithoutpollution.Andinstallationsinremotelocationscanraise

thestandardoflivingandqualityoflifebybringingelectricitytopeoplefarfrom“electrified”

Howmuchelectricityisfromgeothermalenergy?

Sincethefirstgeothermally-generatedelectricityintheworldwasproducedatLarderello,

Italy,in1904,theuseofgeothermalenergyfbrelectricityhasgrownworldwidetoabout7,000

megawattsintwenty-onecountriesaroundtheworld.TheUnitedStatesaloneproduces2,700

megawattsofelectricityfromgeothermalenergy,electricitycomparabletoburningsixtymillion

barrelsofoileachyear.

Howmuchgeothermalenergyisthere?

Thousandsmoremegawattsofpowerthanarecurrentlybeingproducedcouldbedeveloped

fromalready-identifiedhydrothermal(热液的)resources.Withimprovementsintechnology,

muchmorepowerwillbecomeavailable.Usablegeothermalresourceswillnotbelimitedtothe

“shallow“hydrothermalreservoirsatthecrustalplateboundaries.Muchoftheworldisunderlain

England,France,GermanyandBelgiumhaveexperimentedwithpipingwaterintothisdeephot

rocktocreatemorehydrothermalresourcesforuseingeothermalpowerplants.Asdrilling

technologyimproves,allowingustodrillmuchdeeper,geothermalenergyfromhotdryrock
