LangstonHugheswasborninJoplin,Missouri,onFebruary1,1902.Hisparentssoonseparated,andHugheswasrearedmainlybyhismother,hismaternalgrandmother.HeattendedpublicschoolsinKansasandIllinois,graduatingfromhighschoolinCleveland,Ohio,in1920.Inhissenioryearhewaschosenclasspoetandyearbookeditor.LifeIn1920,LangstonmovedtoMexicotolivewithhisfather.HisfatherhadtoescaperacisminAmerica.Yet,Langstonturnedthepaincausedbyhisfamilyproblemsintooneofhismostfamouspoems,“TheNegroSpeaksofRivers.”

Inthispoem,hespeaksofthestrengthandprideofblackpeopleinancientAfricancivilizationsandinAmerica.LifeHisfatherdiscouragedhimtowriteandsenthimtoColumbiaUniversitystudyingengineering.Later,Langstondroppedoutandallthewhilehecontinuedwritingpoetry.AmongtheearlyinfluencesonhiswritingwerepoetsWaltWhitman,CarlSandburgandPaulLawrenceDunbar.LifeAttheendofthatfirstyearatColumbia,hebegantraveling.

Hisexperienceswhiletravelinggreatlyinfluencedhiswork.

Hesentafewofhiswritingsbackhome.

Theywerepublished,whichhelpedestablishhimasaprofessionalwriter.

LifeIn1924,LangstonHughesreturnedtotheUnitedStatestolivewithhismotherinWashington,D.C.

There,ThepoetVachelLindsaydiscoveredhistalent.Hughesthenbecameknownasanewblackpoet.In1929,heattendedTheLincolnUniversityandgotMaster'sdegree3yearslater.LifeHealwayscamebacktoNewYork’sHarlem['hɑ:ləm]area,thecenterofblacklifeinNewYorkCity.

Hughes’creativitywasinfluencedbyhislifeinHarlem.LifeLangstonHughesreturnedtoNewYorkduringaperiodcalledtheHarlemRenaissance.IttookplaceduringtheNineteen-TwentiesandThirties.TheHarlemRenaissancewasaperiodofgreatartisticcreativityamongblackpeople.Forthefirsttime,blackartisticexpressionwasbeingwidelyrecognized.

OnMay22,1967,Hughesdiedfromprostatecancer.
