contributedtotheuniquecontinuityofChinesecivilization.Ontheother,

Chinesepeoplebecametoomuchcontentedwiththeirachievementstodesireany

furtherchanges.Asglobalizationdeepens,itisboundtoaffectouridealof

harmony.

First,globalizationurgesChinatospeedupitsmodernization,which

threatensourregardfortheharmonybetweenManandNature.Forinstance,many

damsandhydropowerstationsarebeingbuiltforeconomicbenefitsatthe

expenseofthewell-preservednaturalhabitats.However,ecologicalmalpractice

ofsuchkindgoesagainstthenotionofharmoniouscoexistenceinancient

Chinesephilosophies.Morethan2,000yearsago,longbeforetheconceptof

environmentalprotectioncameintobeing,DuJiangWeir,agreatirrigation

projectwasbuiltinsouthwesternChinasSichuanprovince.Itsucceededbothin

controllingfloodsandinfacilitatingtheagriculturewithoutposingathreat

totheenvironment.

Moreover,globalizationhasbroughtwithitintensecompetition.

Traditionally,moderationisagoldenprinciple,presidingoverinter-personal

relationsinChina.Today,however,motivatedtocometothetop,somepeople

becomesoself-centeredthattheychoosetosacrificelove,friendshipandeven

familyties.

Lastbutnotleast,diversecultureshavemetinChinaasaconsequenceof

globalization.Therefore,aclashofculturesbecomesinevitable.Unfortunately,

thepastdecadeshavewitnessedahugelossofculturalheritageinChina.In

citieslikeBeijingandXian,hundredsofcentury-oldChinese-stylehousesare

beingdemolishedtomakeroomforskyscrapers,shoppingmallsandeight-lane

expressways.

Fromtheseexamples,weseethedisharmonybroughtaboutbyglobalization.

Yetitisnotglobalizationthatistoblame.Aslongasweapproach

globalizationwithharmonyinmind,itsbenefitwilloutweighitscost.Takemy

hometown,Hangzhou,forexample,thankstothestrenuouseffortsmadebythe

municipalgovernmentinachievingeco-development,variouswaterbirdshave

returnedtotheWestLake,callingithomeagainafteryearsofmigration

elsewhere.Fromthelakebank,weseeskateboardersandtrickcyclistsshowing

offtogetherwithpeopleflyingkitesandkickingshuttlecocksontheplaza

nearby.AlthoughtheycomposeapicturequitedistinctfromtraditionalChinese

paintings,thispictureconveysamodernsenseofharmonyinthiseraof

globalization.

Ladiesandgentlemen,toconclude,IwouldliketoquotefromBritish

philosopherBertrandRussell.IncontrastingChineseandWesterncivilizations,

heobserved:Thedistinctivemeritofwesterncivilizationisthescientific

method;thedistinctivemeritoftheChineseisajustconceptionoftheendsof

life.Itisthesetwothatonemusthopetoseegraduallyuniting.Aswesee

thetremendousprogressChinahasbeenmakingdrawingonexperienceabroad,we

Ourancestorslikedtobuildwalls.TheybuiltwallsinBeijing,Xian,

Nanjingandmanyothercities,andtheybuilttheGreatWall,whichsnakes

throughhalfofourcountry.Theybuiltwallstowardoffenemiesandevil

spirits.Thistraditionhasbeenmaintainedtothisdayaswestillhavemany

parksandschoolswalledofffromthepublic.Igrewupatthefootofthecity

walls,andIvelovedthemsincemychildhood.Foralongtime,wallswereone

ofthemostnaturalthingsintheworld.

intangible.WewillkeepsomewallsbutteardownthosethatimpedeChinas

development.

Ayearago,whenIwasworkingonatermpaper,Ineededabookonbusiness

lawandfoundacopyinthelawschoollibrary.However,thelibrarianturned

downmyrequestwithacoldshoulder,saying,Youcantborrowthisbook,you

arenotastudenthere.Intheend,Ihadtospend200yuanbuyingacopy;

meanwhile,thecopyinlawschoolwasgatheringdustontheshelf.

Atthebeginningofthissemester,Iheardthatmyuniversityhasstarted

notonlytounifyitslibrariesbutalsolinkthemupwithlibrariesofother

universities,somyexperiencewillnotberepeated.Barrierswillbereplaced

bybridges.Throughaninter-libraryloansystem,wewillhaveaccesstobooks

whetheritisgoodorbad.Butonethingisforsure:itdrawsourattentionto

Chinastangibleandintangiblewallsandforcesustoexaminetheirrolesin

themodernworld.

AndhowabouttheancientwallsinmycityandothercitiesShouldwetear

themdownJusttheopposite.Mycity,likeBeijingandothercities,is

actuallymakingagreatefforttopreservethewalls.Thesewallsattractnot
