Toimprovetheresults,anotherprogramwasstartedinMissourithatconcentratedonparents

asthechild'sfirstteachers.Thisprogramwasbasedonresearchshowingthatworkingwiththe

familyisthemosteffectivewayofhelpingchildrengetthebestpossiblestartinlife.Thefour-year

studyincluded380familieswhowereabouttohavetheirfirstchildandrepresenteddifferent

socioeconomicstatuses,agesandfamilystructures.Theprograminvolvedtrainededucators

visitingandworkingwiththeparentorparentsandthechild.Theprogramalsogavetheparents

someguidance,andusefulskillsonchilddevelopment.

Atthree,thechildreninvolvedinthe“Missouri“programwereevaluatedwiththechildren

selectedfromthesamesocioeconomicbackgroundsandfamilysituations.Theresultswereobvious.

Thechildrenintheprogramweremoreadvancedinlanguagedevelopment,problemsolvingand

otherintellectualskillsthantheirpeers.Theyperformedequallywellregardlessofsocioeconomic

backgroundsorfamilystructures.Theonefactorthatwasfoundtoaffectthechild'sdevelopment

wasthepoorqualityofparent-childinteraction.Thatinteractionwasnotnecessarilybadinpoorer

families.

The“Missouri“programcomparesquitedistinctlywiththe“HeadStart^^program.Without

asimilarfocusonparenteducationandonthevitalimportanceofthefirstthreeyears,some

evidenceindicatesthatitwillnotbeenoughtoovercomeeducationalunfairness.
