Synopsis

PadméAmidala'scruiserisdestroyedinanunsuccessfulassassinationattempt.

TheopeningcrawlrevealsthattheGalacticRepublicisincrisis.Aseparatistmovement,ledbyformerJediMasterCountDooku,hasthreatenedthepeace.SenatorPadméAmidala,formerQueenofNaboo,returnstotheGalacticSenatetovoteagainstthecreationofanArmyoftheRepublic.UponherarrivalatCoruscant,shenarrowlyescapesanassassinationattempt,abombplacedonhership.Asaresult,ChancellorPalpatinerequeststhatshebeputundertheprotectionofJediKnightObi-WanKenobiandhisapprentice,AnakinSkywalker.Thatnight,ZamWesell,abountyhunter,makesanotherattemptonPadmé'slife,butWesellisherselfkilled(tosilenceher)justafterObi-WanandAnakincaptureher.TheJediCouncilassignsObi-Wantoinvestigatethemurder,whileAnakinistoprotectPadmébyescortinghertoherhomeplanetofNaboo.Anakinwelcomestheopportunity;heoftenbecomesangryatandfrustratedwithObi-Wan'scriticism,andisgladtohaveanopportunitytobealonewithPadmé.RepresentativeJarJarBinksassumestheSenator'sdutiesinherabsence.

OnGeonosis,Obi-WanlearnsthatCountDookuandNuteGunrayhavebuiltanewdroidarmyandthatGunrayhasorderedtheassassinationofPadmé.Justbeforebeingcaptured,Obi-WanrelaysthisinformationtoAnakinsothathecanrelayittotheJediCouncilonCoruscant.OncetheJedilearnofDooku'sarmy,JediMasterMaceWinduleadsateamtoGeonosis.Meanwhile,RepresentativeJarJarBinkscallsforChancellorPalpatinetobegivenemergencypowers,withwhichhecancalltherecentlydiscoveredclonearmyintobattle.BackonGeonosis,CountDookutriestopersuadeObi-Wantojoinhim,warninghimthattheSenateissecretlyunderthecontrolofamysteriousSithLordbythenameofDarthSidious.Obi-Wanrefusestobelievehim,sayingthattheJediwouldhaveknownifthatwasthecase.UponlearningthatObi-Wanisintrouble,AnakinandPadmégotoGeonosis,buttheyarecapturedduringtheirinfiltrationofadroidfactory,despiteAnakin'svaliantefforts.TheyjoinObi-Waninanarena-likecomplexwherethreehugecreaturesareunleashedonthemfortheirexecution.Duringtheirstruggle,MaceWinduarriveswiththeJedi,andtheybattlethedroidarmy.JustasdefeatfortheJediseemsimminent,YodaarriveswiththeRepublic'snewclonearmy.

AlargebattleeruptsbetweentheRepublic'scloneforcesandtheSeparatists'droidarmy.CountDookuattemptstoescape,butObi-WanandAnakintrackhimtoasecrethangar,wheretheyengagehimincombat.DookuquicklyinjuresObi-WanandcutsoffAnakin'srightarm.YodathenarrivesandengagesDookuinlightsabercombat.Dooku,realizinghemaybeoutmatched,causesasupportpylontonearlyfallonAnakinandObi-Wan;YodausestheForcetostopthis,allowingDookutoescapewiththeplansforanewweapon.InadesolateindustrialdistrictofCoruscant,hemeetsupwithhismaster,DarthSidious,whoispleasedthatthewarhasbegun"asplanned".DookuisrevealedtobetheapprenticeSithLord,DarthTyranus.OnCoruscant,Obi-WaninformstheJediCouncilofDooku'swarningthatDarthSidiousiscontrollingtheSenate.Allofthem,includingYoda,aresurprisinglyhesitanttobelievethis,statingthattheDarkSideiscapableofcreatingfearandmistrust.YodaandWindualsoagreethattheDarkSideisnowcloudingeverything,andthattheyshouldcloselymonitortheSenate.Meanwhile,Palpatineoverseesthelaunchingofamassiveclonetrooperforce.OnNaboo,Anakin(withanewmechanicalhand)andPadméholdasecretwedding,towhichonlythedroidsC-3POandR2-D2arewitnesses.

Reaction

WhilemanysawthefilmasamarkedimprovementoverThePhantomMenace,initialreviewsweremixed.OntheRottenTomatoesreviewsite,thefilmreceiveda66%favorablerating,whichwasslightlyhigherthanthe63%ratingofitspredecessor,ThePhantomMenace.Therewasgeneraladmirationfortheactionsequencesandspecialeffects,andcriticismofthemoretraditionaldramaticelements,suchascharacterdevelopmentanddialogue,especiallywithrespecttotherelationshipbetweenPadméandAnakin.

Criticscalledthedialogue"stiff"and"flat".Theacting(particularlybyChristensenandPortman)wasalsodisparagedbysomecriticsforsimilarcharacteristics.Conversely,othercriticsfeltfanswouldbepleasedtoseethatJarJarBinksplaysonlyaminorrole.HeinfactmakesanemotionalappealtotheGalacticSenateinsupportofgrantingPalpatineemergencypowers—unknowinglylayingsomeoftheguiltforPalpatine'sbrutalrisetopoweronhisownshoulders.Additionally,JarJar'sattemptsatcomicreliefseeninThePhantomMenaceweretoneddown;instead,C-3POreprisedsomeofhisbumblingtraditionsinthatrole.Despitereports,McGregordidnotrefertothefilmas"unsatisfactory".Hedid,however,usethewordinreferencetotheswordplaywhencomparingittotheclimaticduelinRevengeoftheSithasitnearedrelease.Healsoderidedthefilm's"terrible,terribletitle"innumerousinterviews,suchasonefoundinEmpiremagazine.

Thefilmgrossed$310,676,740intheUnitedStatesand$338,721,588overseas,ahugefinancialsuccessthatneverthelesswasovershadowedbytheevengreaterbox-officesuccessofThePhantomMenace.Also,itwasnotthetopgrossingfilmoftheyear,thefirsttimethataStarWarsfilmdidnothavethisdistinction.ThefilmsthatoutearneditwereSpider-ManandTheLordoftheRings:TheTwoTowers,bothofwhichenjoyedamorefavorablecriticalreception.Adjustedforinflation,AttackoftheClonesisthelowest-performingStarWarsfilmattheNorthAmericanboxoffice.
