In1847,VernewassentbyhisfamilytostudylawatauniversityinParis,buthepreferredtowritenovels,

poemsandplays.Aftergraduating,herealizedhewantedtowriteadventurestoriesbasedonscienceand

technology.Thishadneverbeendonebefore,butVernewassurethatitwouldbeasuccess.Hisfirststory,Five

WeeksinaBalloon,waspublishedinSeptember1862.Hiscareerlastedformorethan40years,duringwhichtime

hewrotemorethan60grippingstories.

Tobeginwith,Vernewrotepositiveandoptimisticbooks.Manyoftheseweretobehismostpopular

creations.Althoughsomeincludedfantasticalelements,theywereusuallybasedinscientificfact,makingthem

believable.Thesehappystoriesweren’ttolast.Ashegotolder,Vernebecamelessconfidentintheideathat

scienceandtechnologywerealwaysgoodfortheplanet.Hisbooksstartedtoincludemorescientistswhoused

technologyfortheirown-sometimesevil-purposes.Vernediedon24March1905,butnewbookscontinuedto
