PCIExpress(PCIe,PCI-e)isahigh-speedserialcomputerexpansionbusstandard.PCIExpressasahigh-bandwidth,lowpincount,serial,interconnecttechnology.ItwasdesignedtoreplacetheolderPCIandAGPbusstandards.PCIehasnumerousimprovementsovertheolderstandards,includinghighermaximumsystembusthroughput,lowerI/Opincountandsmallerphysicalfootprint,betterperformancescalingforbusdevices,amoredetailederrordetectionandreportingmechanism(AdvancedErrorReporting,AER),andnativehot-swapfunctionality.PCIExpressarchitectureprovidesahighperformanceI/OinfrastructureforDesktopPlatformswithtransferratesstartingat2.5Gigatransferspersecondoverax1PCIExpresslaneforGigabitEthernet,TVTuners,Firewire1394a/bcontrollers,andgeneralpurposeI/O.PCIExpressarchitectureprovidesahighperformancegraphicsinfrastructureforDesktopPlatformsdoublingthecapabilityofexistingAGP8xdesignswithtransferratesof4.0Gigabytespersecondoverax16PCIExpresslaneforgraphicscontrollers.Alaneiscomposedoftwodifferentialsignalingpairs,withonepairforreceivingdataandtheotherfortransmitting.ExpressCardutilizingPCIExpressinterface,developedbythePCMCIAgroupformobilecomputers.PCIExpressAdvancedPowerManagementfeatureshelptoextendplatformbatterylifeandtoenableuserstoworkanywhere,withoutanACpowersource.ThePCIExpresselectricalinterfaceisalsousedinsomecomputerstorageinterfacesSATAExpressandM.2.ThebroadadoptionofPCIExpressinthemobile,enterpriseandcommunicationsegmentsenablesconvergencethroughthere-useofacommoninterconnecttechnology.PCI-Eisaserialbuswhichusestwolow-voltagedifferentialLVDSpairs,at2.5Gb/sineachdirection[onetransmit,andonereceivepair].PCIExpresssupports1x[2.5Gbps],2x,4x,8x,12x,16x,and32xbuswidths[transmit/receivepairs].Thedifferentialpins[Lanes]listedinthepinouttableaboveareLVDSwhichstandsfor:LowVoltageDifferentialSignaling.
