Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. 6 年过去了,她又收到了泰迪的一封短信。before 的意思是“ 在 之前”,此句的翻译是根据这个含义引申而来的,是为了让译文更加通顺、更容易理解才进行了这样的意译。翻译 before 这样的连接词,要根据上下文灵活掌握。2. And guess what? 你猜怎么着?在叙述一件
27、会令人感到惊讶的事时,美国人习惯在句首加上Guess what?或是 You know what?来增强语气。 当然,Guess what?从字面上来看是 “ 猜 猜看发生了什么事” 的意思,但实际上绝不是要听者去猜发生了什么事,只是营造谈话的气氛,给听者讲一件意想不到的事情而已。这就如同中 文的“ 你知道吗 ?” 一样。又如,你刚找到一份工作,你就可以说:Guess what? I got a job offer.Part IV Translation & Writing Teaching notes: 本单元英译汉练习是英语否定结构的翻译,主要让学生练习英语的部分否定、双重否定、 完全否定
28、结构和含否定意义词语句子等的一些翻译技能。英语中的部分否定也称半否定,常用的词语和短语有:not all, allnot, not everyone, not always, not everything, not every, not both, bothnot, not everyday, not altogether, not everywhere等。比如练习中的第三句就属于部分否 定句 : Working is not always convenient, and there will be times when youd prefer to be doing something el
29、se. 部分否定的翻译比较简单,常常翻译为“ 并 非所有,并不是都” 。这一句可译为:工作并不总是方便的,有时候你倒宁可 在做别的事情。又如:Its not difficult to get money for research or at least its not always difficult. 获得研究的资金并不困难,或至少并不总是那么困难。Not all misunderstandings result in highways being closed or passengers flying to the wrong continent. 并非所有的误会都会导致公路关闭或乘客飞错
30、大陆。The two messages cannot be both true. 这两条信息不可能都是正确的。Not all lawyers have large incomes. 并非所有的律师都有高收入。All reward programs are not equal. 并非所有的奖赏方案都是相同的。练习中的第二句和第四句是练习英语含双重否定结构句子的翻译。双重否定 是指一个句子中出现两个表示否定的词语,如第二句中 can t without 。含 双重否定结构的英语句子可以翻译成汉语的双重否定,也可以根据上下文翻 译为汉语的肯定句, 一般取决于哪种形式更符合汉语的习惯表达。如第二句:B
31、ut installing a green roof cant be done without a lot of planning and information. 可以译为:但安装绿色屋顶没有大量的规划和信息是做不成的。又如 : Her divorce was not unexpected. 她的离婚并不出人意料。/ 她的离婚是意料之中的事。Anxiety about taking tests is not uncommon.对参加考试感到焦虑是常有的。/对参加考试感到焦虑并非罕见。Mr. Brown said elections would not have been possible w
32、ithout UK forces. 布朗先生说没有英国军队的存在就不可能有选举。But nothing at all could have been done without their support. 如果没有他们的支持,根本就不可能取得什么成绩/可能什么都做不成。英语表示完全否定的词语有 never, no, not, none, nobody, nothing, nowhere, neither, nor, not at all 等。练习中的第一句练习完全否定的翻译。又 如:But never have we been offered such an opportunity.可是从来没
33、有人曾 给过我们这样一个机会。Larrys no friend of mine. 拉里根本就不是我的朋友。None of the townspeople had ever seen such weather. 没有一个城里的人曾见到过这样的气候。练习中的第五句练习的是翻译过程中否定成分的转换,把否定主句的谓语转换为否定宾语从句的谓语。在英语中,否定词与像think,believe 和 suppose这类动词构成的结构, 并且后面带从句时, 形式上是对主句谓语动词的否定,实际上否定的是从句的谓语动词,因此在翻译时需把否定转移到从句,这样 才符合汉语的表达习惯。又如:I dont think it
34、 s because they don t know how. I think it s because its counter-productive. 我想这并不是因为他们不知道怎么做,而是因为这么做 会适得其反。I don t suppose the painting will ever be worth a thousand dollars.我想这 画不会值 1 000 美元。I dont think he will want to say anything to the media. 我认为他不愿意 向媒体说任何东西。练习中第六句含有 “ more than can”的结构,它形式上是
35、肯定的,但具有否定意义,在意义上相当于英语的can not ,译为“ 简直不,无法,难以” : The blow is more than words can tell. 这打击远非言语所能表达。下面再提供一些例子供教学参考:The impact theyve had on my confidence is more than words can describe. 他们对我信心的影响是言语无法描述的。The costs associated with the defense is more than many defendants can bear. 与辩护相关的费用远非许多被告所能承受。下

Practical writing: 找工作需要简历,这是给招聘单位的“ 见面礼”,也相当于“ 推销” 自己的“ 广告” ,因此在某种意义上说,简历写得好坏,关系到应聘的成败。虽然简历有各种写法,但大部分简历都应该包括以下一些内容:个人资料 personal information: name, address and contact information (telephone number and/or email a
39、ddress), date and place of birth, nationality, married or single(有些人认为简历中写年龄和婚姻状况现在已不常见了) 、教育背景(education)、工作经历 (previous employment and work experience)、外语和计算 机使用能力 (knowledge of English and of other languages, computer skill)、通过 的考试 (examination passed, especially if internationally recognized)、曾获得的奖励 (awards)、社会活动(activities) 、兴趣爱好(interests & hobbies)、推荐人(references)等。在写教育背景和工
