Known as “the Wall Street in the Far East” in the past, the Bund now symbolizes Shanghais intention to become a major financial capital in Asi

2、a. The physical change in the 1990s makes it a beautiful waterfront promenade and a vital link in the traffic system of the city. An introduction of the Bund usually covers its location, its history, its layout and functions, and the attractions which are highlighted by a line of European-style arch

3、itectures. Each of the attractions on the Bund is usually introduced with its name, its history, its physical features, and its function.Brief introduction Bund is an Anglo-Indian word for embankment筑堤/堤防/堤坝. The Bund area refers to a 1,500-meter stretch along the Huangpu River, running from the Wai

4、baidu Bridge in the north to Yanan Road in the south.At the beginning of the 19th century, this area was a mere shallow waterfront covered with reeds. As a result of the Opium War in the 1840s, the Bund area became the site of some of the earliest foreign settlements after Shanghai was opened as one

5、 of the five “Treaty Ports” specified in the unequal Nanjing Treaty imposed by foreign powers. Block after block of buildings were erected建立;竖立 in the early 20th century and they housed embassiesembs , hotels, clubs, companies, agencies and banks. In the 1930s, it was described as the “Wall Street i

6、n the Far East” for the large number of banks and financial institutions located here.Brief introduction In the 1990s, the Bund area underwent a great physical transformation, followed by a renovation completed in 2010. While restoring the Bund as the central business district, the municipal governm

7、ent also managed to highlight this area as one of the major tourist attractions.Along the riverfront where formerly there were docks, a promenade was raised, on the one hand, to prevent the city from flooding and, on the other, to offer visitors a wide walkway for picture-snapping or relaxing by the

8、 beautiful river. The promenade,prmnd散步 also sees local people doing morning exercises and lovers enjoying themselves on romantic evenings.Brief introduction Though the physical change on the waterfront was great, the skylines of this area remained almost the same. The municipal government renovated

9、 the old buildings of this most foreign section of the city, highlighting them as the best tourist attractions of Shanghai. Known as “Gallery of World Architecture”, this imposing neighborhood boasts 23 buildings in a line, which were built mostly in the 1920s and 30s with the earliest in 1906. They

10、 are in a variety of styles, ancient Greek arches, Baroque columns, and Spanish balconiesblkniz , displaying before you the rich flavor of exotic lands丰富的异国风味. They harmonize in architectural tone, dotting Shanghais enchanting skyline. The luxuriant lgrnt decorations, straight outlines and majestic

12、 the Bund is also a traffic hub in the new transportation network of the city. The main streets running east-west all start at the Bund, including the east-west artery-the Elevated Yanan Road. The road running along the Bund is also a vital link in the citys new highway network and about half of the

13、 traffic east of the North-South Elevated Road uses the Bund. Beneath the road is a vehicle tunnel constructed in 2010. Running for 3.3 kilometers, the tunnel is an underground artery动脉;干道;主流 between the Hongkou District north of the Suzhou Creek and the central Huangpu District.Brief introduction I

14、n the new century, the Bund area is not confined to the former British Settlement, but extends both southward and northward. It is evolving into one of the most popular urban resorts of Shanghai. The history of the Bund can be considered the epitome of the history of modern Shanghai.Shanghai Pudong

15、Development Bank(HSBC Building)Shanghai was once regarded as an oriental financial hub东方金融中心 and the Bund area was nicknamed “the Wall Street in the Far East.” Many of the buildings lining the stone now used to house banks from different countries. Among these banks, the most legendary one was the H

16、ong Kong and Shanghai Bank, which later evolved into演变成 the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation(HSBC).Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank was established in 1864 to finance the trade between China and the western countries. The Shanghai office was opened in 1865. In the following years, the bank gr

17、ew rapidly in wealth, and its business involved customs duties关税;进口税and salt tax盐税 盐课, the lifeline of Chinese economy. To match its financial strength财政实力, a grand office building was set up on the Bund in 1923, which became the landmark of the financial center of the Far East成为了具有里程碑意义的远东的金融中心.Sha

18、nghai Pudong Development Bank(HSBC Building)The building is a rectangular establishment, described as the “finest building to be found anywhere between the Suez Canal and Bering Strait从苏伊士运河到远东白令海峡最讲究的建筑.” it is of the ancient Greek style that belongs to the neo-classical school新古典学派. Marked by hori

19、zontal lines, the exterior walls were made up of huge stone blocks. The one with his mouth open is called Stephen, and the one with a

Eight paintings are of the landmarks of eight great cities around the world. They are Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Bangkok bkk曼谷(泰国首都), and Calcutta klkt 加

22、尔各答(印度城市). Shanghai Pudong Development Bank(HSBC Building)In all the eight cities the Bank opened its offices. In the foreground of the eight paintings are eight goddesses. The spacious lobby is supported by 18 Italian marble pillars. Four of the pillars are said to be a natural whole piece each. Th

23、ey are one meter in diameter damt直径 and six meters in height. They were quarried, cut and polished, and moved herekwred他们开采出来,切割和抛光,搬到这里. It is reported that there are still two in the Louvre in Paris which make up six in all in the world.After its completionkmplin完工, this building was the head offi

24、ce of the bank until 1955. Between 1956 and 1995, this was the seat of the Shanghai Municipal Peoples Government上海市人民政府的所在地. On December 12, 1996, the Pudong Development Bank浦东发展银行 became the new owner of this building. The HSBC now has its office tower across the Huangpu River in the promising Pudo

25、ng New Area.Customs HouseThe building with a clock tower on the top is the Customs House. It is renowned as the sister building of the HSBC. It is a framework structure of the classic and Renaissance style. The building was erected in 1927.The first Customs House was set up in Shanghai in 1685 to co

26、llect tariffs and duties. After Shanghai became a treaty port, a separate Customs House was set up in the Bund area, specializing in foreign trade. As it was to the north of the original one, the new Customs House was named Jiang Hai Bei Guan or the North Customs House. That was in 1846. In 1854, th

27、e Customs House was taken over by the Western treaty powers. The European customs system was adopted and the customs service was staffed by delegates of the Western treaty powers. In 1893, a Tudor-style architecture was erected, which had a clock tower in the middle. Clocks are installed in customs

28、houses to set a standard time for traders from different countries.Customs HouseShortly after the ending of World War 1 in the early 20th century, many foreign-owned companies started to rebuild their estates on the bund. It was in this period that new customs house was constructed.Built at the cost

31、ant feature is probably the clock tower, which serves as the vertical axis垂直轴/纵坐标 of the building and gives the construction a solemnslm 庄严的/严肃的 look. The tower houses one of the most famous clocks throughout the world. The clock, built at the cost of more than 2,000 taels of silver, was made after

32、the style of Big Ben on the top of the British Parliament House英国国会大厦 in London. The face of the clock is 5.4 meters in diameter damt and its minute hand measures 3.17 meters in length. One of its pendulums钟摆pendjlm weighs 2,000 kilograms. The clock made its debut debju初次登台/开张 on the first day of 19

The tolling with music has become part of the legendary past.Today , this building still serves as a customs house, but to accommodate to the growing busi

34、ness, a new building has been in service in Lujiazui across the Huangpu River.Peace Hotel(Cathay Hotel & HuiZHong Hotel)Peace Hotel, which overlooks the Huangpu River, operates in two separate buildings-North Building and South Building, divided by the famous Nanjing Road, Originally, the North

35、Building was called the Cathay Hotelkei华懋饭店/国泰旅社, while the South was named the Huizhong Hotel.The North Building with a cone-shapedkuneipt锥形的 roof stands at the corner of the Bund and Nanjing Road. Now it is renamed the Fairmont Peace Hotel, a joint venture between Shanghai Jinjiang International H

36、otels Group上海锦江国际酒店集团 and the Fairmont Hotels & Resort 费尔蒙酒店及度假村.Peace Hotel(Cathay Hotel & HuiZHong Hotel)First opened to the public as the Cathay Hotel in September, 1929, the Building was Financed by Victor Sassoon, a Jewish merchant. Built in the Gothic style of the Chicago school, the C

37、athay Hotel was an outstanding modern high-rise of steel frame structure, dubbed the “Mansion in the East”. It is of ten stories and partly of 13 stories in the middle. The outer walls of the different stories were built of granite, except those of the ninth and the top floors that were well paved w

38、ith bricks. The vertical lines, waistlines and eaves are all carved. Part of the roof on the eastern side is in a cone shape and covered with copper, which has become its most striking feature最引人注目的特点.Peace Hotel(Cathay Hotel & HuiZHong Hotel)Comprising 270 guest rooms and suitesswits套房, the hot

The Chinese, American,

42、 Indian and English suites have been preserved from the former hotel while the French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and German suites have been redesigned in keeping with their original concepts. 44、 HuiZHong Hotel)The widely know Old Men Jazz Bar of the Peace Hotel is part of the legend of the hotel. It is the German-style bar on the ground floor where a band of six musicians play jazz on most nights. The musicians are well over 70 years old, whose programs are mainly those of their generation

45、 from the past. In the Jazz Bar, the resident band has entertained thousands of guests from various countries, including the former US presidents Mr. Carter and Mr. Reagan. Many visitors to Shanghai have left with good memories of the beautiful nights spent with the Old Men Jazz Band 老人爵士乐队.Peace Ho

46、tel(Cathay Hotel & HuiZHong Hotel)The South Building, built in 1908, was a British-style brick and stone structure with a flat roof. Its exterior boasts Renaissance style of architecture. 47、lden decorations, but also in its rich historical heritage.Late in December 1911, representatives from all walks of life in Shanghai all gathered in the Huizhong Hotel to celebrate the election of Dr. Sun Yatsen孙中山 as the acting President of China.Bank of China, Shanghai BranchStanding next to the P

48、eace Hotel is the Bank of China, Shanghai Branch. It was completed in 1937 and has served as the office of the Bank of China except for a short period of time. It is the only building on the Bund that bears some distinctive features of traditional Chinese architecture. Looking at the office tower fa

49、cing the Huangpu River, you will see the tapered roofs锥形的屋顶 that are covered with arched stones tt 拱形的石头. Right above the main gate you will see carvings about Confucius making his lecture tours in various states. In front of the gate are a flight of nine steps leading to the bank. The figure “nine”

50、 in China is the largest single digit suggestive of the supremacys(j)uprems or infinity which here denotes the infinite wealth无穷财富of the bank. 51、 Shanghai BranchThe Banking building was invested and constructed by Chinese and was originally designed to be 34 stories high 34层楼高, and would then be the tallest building in Shanghai. Just after the foundation work was completed, however, Victor Sassoon, owner of the neighboring building, interfer

52、ed in the project and demanded that the new establishment should never be higher than the spire of his mansion. As one of the biggest taxpayers in the International Settlement, Sassoon compelled the then Chinese authority not to issue a construction permit for setting up the 34-storied complex. As the blueprint could not be fully realized, the bank building had to be limit
