1、InChinaasintheUS,onecaneasilygiveupthecareerofaIanguageteachertobecomealawyerorabusinessman.I,however,gaveupapromisinglegalandbusinesscareertobecomeaIanguageteacher,butIhaveneverregrettedit.Infact,themoreIteach,themorecommittedIamtoteaching.Butnotjustteaching.HavingbattledwithChinastraditionalmodeof
2、teachingforseveralyears,InowwouldliketohelpimproveteachinginChinabyintroducingnewandmoreeffectiveinstructionaltechnologyandmediaintothecountry.Forthat,Iwouldliketopursueanadvaneeddegreeineducationinyourcountry.NowanEnglishteacheratthetrainingcenteroftheChinaNationalContainerCorporation,Igraduatedin1
3、995fromtheCapitalUniversityofEconomicsandBusinessinBeijing,whereImajoredinbusinesslaw.Atthishighlyrespectedhigher-learninginstitution,Ireceivedbroadtrainingthatwasbothrigorousandvigorous.Afterfouryearsofundergraduatestudies,thestronglogicinherentinlawtranslatedintostronglogicinmythinking.Withtheknow
4、ledgeandskillsIattainedinthelawprogram,IboastthekindofintellectualmaturitythatwouldhelpmewhateverIdo.Butlawwasnevermyfirstchoiceforaprofession.Startingfrommyhighschooldays,Ialwaysdreamedofbecomingateacher.Inthesecondyearofhighschool,weoncehadtowriteanessayonthetopic“whatdoyouwanttodowhenyougrowup”.I
5、proudlywrote,Iwanttobeateacher!”ButmyparentsshatteredmydreambyinsistingthatIpursueanotherprofession.Myfather,anengineerwithaPh.D.degree,andmymother,auniversityteacherofEnglish,hadtheirreasons.Chineseteachers,particularlythoseteachingattheprimaryandsecondarylevels,arepoorlypaidandbegrudginglyrespecte
6、d.Beingyoungandinexperieneedintheworld,IaccededtotheirwisheswhenIwaschoosingmymajorfortheuniversity.Butmypassionforteachingwasnottobestifledforever.Giveranyopportunity,itwouldburstout.UpongraduationwithanLL.B.Degree,IfirsttookupthepositionofasupervisorwiththeChinaNationalContainerCorporationincharge
7、ofitsOverseasSalesDepartment.AsthejobentailedfrequenttranslationandinterpretationbetweenChineseandEnglish,IpersistedinimprovingmyEnglishproficiencybyattendingvarioustrainingcoursesandlearningitonmyown.Mycommandoftheforeigntonguebecamesogoodthat,afteraboutoneyear,Ibegantoteachittomycolleaguesonafull-
8、timebasisatthecompanystrainingcenter.Afterahugedetour,mycareerfinallygotbackontrack.Whatmakesteachingsoenjoyabletomeisthatitisalearningexperienee.Ienjoyitthemostwhenmystudentsaskdifficultquestions,particularlyquestionsthatIhavetothinklongandhardtoanswer.Ialsoenjoyposingquestionstostudents,butmyquest
9、ionsareneverintendedtointimidatethestudentsoreventesttheirknowledgebutratherdesignedtostimulatetheirminds.Intheconstantexchangeofquestionsandanswers,studentsandteachersimprovethemselvesaliketothecreditoftheoldChinesesaying:Toteachistolearn.Inmythreeyearsofteaching,Ireallyhavelearnedagreatdeal.Oneoft
10、hethingsIhavelearnedistheabilitytonotonlydealwithbutalsostrikeanaccordwithpeopleofdifferentbackgrounds.Mystudentsatthetrainingcenterarealladultsaccomplishedinavarietyofrolesandprofessions.Inmostcases,theyareolderthanIam.WhileIstandastheirequals,Ihaveservedastheirmentorsandrolemodelsthesamewayasmostt
11、eachersdotheirstudents.Bysodoing,IhavewontheirtrustandconfidenceinwhatIteach,whichhashelpedtomakemyteachingpowerfulandeffective.Totakefulladvantageofmyteachingskills,IstartedinOctober1996toteachEnglishandothersubjectsattheprimaryschoolIattendedwhenIwasachild.AsthechildrenIteachareattheagewhenIstudie
12、dhere,Iamparticularlysensitivetotheirneedsandappreciativeoftheirpotential.Togetherwithotherteachers,Idesignedvarioustrainingprogramsincalligraphy,art,writing,mentalcalculation,andEnglish,programsthatcombinelearningwithentertainment.Thekidsnmyclassarenowlearningmoreandfasterthankstothefuntheyfindever
13、ydayinmyprograms.Entertainmentis,however,bynomeansjustaployIusetosweetenthebitterpilloflearningforthechildren,butratherhasitsownintrinsicvalue.Whilekidscanhardlylearnwellwithoutbeingabletohavefun,thelackoffunhurtsmorethanthekidsabilitytolearn.Itcanimpairthekidsemotionalandpsychologicalhealthtoanexte
14、ntthatnoamountofknowledgeandskillsdrabteachingforce-feedsintothemcanmakeup.Entertainmentisthereforepartandparcelofwhatweteachershavetoprovidetochildrenifwearetohelpthemgrowupintoproductivemembersofthesociety.ThewayIseeentertainment,itshouldbeconsideredanendineducation.AsChinaseducationisorientedover
15、whelminglytowardshelpingkidspassexams,entertainmentisabouttheleastonthemindofanaverageteacherorprincipal.Intherushtoproducesuperkidsasmeasuredbythegradesoutofexams,thepurposeofeducationislostalltoooften.Thecurriculumislimitedtosubjectscoveredbymandatoryexams.Studentsareseldomencouragedtocomeupwithor
16、iginalideas.Interactionbetweenteachersandstudentsiskeptataminimumintheclassroom.Theteacherscompetetoheaphomeworkonthestudents,asdotheparents.Whileeverybodyistiredtodeath,fewkidsgetarmedwiththeabilitytotakeinitiativesorsolvereal-worldproblems.Itishightimethatfreshapproacheswerebroughtin.Oneofthewayst
17、omakeachangetotheChineseclassroomistoutilizenewtechnologiesandmediaofteaching.SchoolauthoritiesinChina,asthoseelsewhere,increasinglyrealizetheimportaneeofcomputerization,andmanyofthebetter-offschoolsinChinaarealreadystackedwithstate-of-the-artcomputers.Butreportssayonlyatinyfractionofthosecomputersa
18、readequatelyutilized.Thesituationwithothereducationaltechnologiesandmediaisnobetter.Theyareeitherabsentfromtheschoolsittingorvastlyunder-used.FewChineseteachershaveacquiredtheknow-howorthedrivetomakeuseofthesemodernfacilities.IthereforewouldliketopursuefirstamastersdegreeandthenaPh.D.degreeininstruc
19、tionaltechnologyandmediaintheUnitedStates,wheretheuseofmoderneducationalfacilitiesisundoubtedlythemostadvaneedintheworld.JudgingbytheinformationIhaveculledfromyour,websiteIthinkyourinstitutionisanAmericanleaderintheresearchandstudiesofthisfield.Iamanxioustostudyundertheseasonedguidaneeofyourdistingu

22、dultintheclassroomgenuinelylikedthem.Afterafewyearsexperieneeteachingseniors,Iacceptedateachingjobatthemiddleschoolwiththefreshmanclassthathadjustlearnedtheywouldnotphysicallybemovingtothehighschool.HowwouldImotivateandgettoknowthesekids?EverythingthatIhadeverheardaboutorrememberedabout9thgrademadem
23、ewanttoturnandrun.Butwhatconvincedmetotakethisjobwastechnology.InmyinterviewIlearnedthatinsteadofthelibrary,IwastousetheInternet(thewhat?).IwastoldthatIwouldreceivealaptopcomputer(arentthosethethingsthatpeoplewithrealjobsused?)andthatthekidscouldteachmeanythingIneededtoknow.Computersbecamemything.Im
24、mediatelyIbegantolearnhowtosurftheInternetfrom8thand9thgraders(SanjandJudysaidIwasteacherspet).Mykidsopenedupandsetasidetheirragingadolesceneetousetechnologytohelpmeandhelpeachother.Astheyearwiththefreshmencontinued,Iwasoverjoyed.First,mykidsandIhadthebestrapportinyears(goshMissGlazer,areallofyourPo
25、werPointslidesgonnalookthesame?).Second,mycreativityinteachingincreasedasnewdoorswereopenedtomeandinturntomystudents(conspiracytakesonawholenewmeaningwhentheInternetisyourprimarysource).Third,Iwaslearningnewandexcitingthings.Ihadfinallyfoundacombinationofskillsthataffectedmystudentsinsuchapositivewa
26、ythatIknewIhadtosharemyfindings.Ihavesincetakenmycomputerknowledge,instructionaldesignideas,plusmyemphasisonpersonalrelationshipsandappliedittoteachersandstudentsinmydistrictandotherdistrictsintheNorthTexasarea.ThroughtheLearning,Design,andTechnologyprogramatStanfordUniversityIhopetocontinueontheroutethatstartedformeatthemiddleschool.IknowthatIwilllearnnewthingsandhaveanopportunitytoapplythemtoeducationalsett
