2、anies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 perce nt) of their no rmal pay would ben efit the economy as a whole as well as the in dividual compa nies and the employees who decided to take the opti on. The shorte ned workweek would in crease compa ny
3、profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additi onal payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 8
4、0 perce nt of the no rmal rate. In the end, compa nies would have fewer overworked and error-pr one employees for the same mon ey, which would in crease compa ny profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary ben efits of offeri ng this opti on to employees is that it would reduce un employ
5、me nt rates.If many full-time employees started worki ng fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 perce nt week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 perce nt rate. Fin ally, the opti on of a four-day workweek would b
6、e better for in dividual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in excha nge for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, purs uing private in terests, or enjoying leisure activities.Liste ning Professor Offering employees
7、the option of a four-day workweek won't affect the company profits, econo mic con diti ons or the lives of employees in the ways the read ing suggests.First, offering a four-day workweek will probably force companies to spend more, possibly a lot more. Adding new workers means putting much more
8、money into providing training and medical ben efits. Remember the costs of things like health ben efits can be the same whether an employee works four days or five. And hav ing more employees also requires more office space and more computers. These additi onal costs would quickly cut into compa ny
9、profits.Second, with respect to overall employme nt, it does n't follow that once some employees choose a four-day workweek, many more jobs will become available. Hiring new workers is costly, as I argued a mome nt ago. And compa nies have other optio ns. They might just choose to ask their empl
10、oyees to work overtime to make up the differenee. Worse, companies might raise expectati ons. They might start to expect that their four-day employees can do the same amount of work they used to do in five days. If this happe ns, the n no additi onal jobs will be created and curre nt jobs will becom
11、e more un pleasa nt.Fin ally, while a four-day workweek offers employees more free time to in vest in their pers onal lives, it also prese nts some risks that could end up reduc ing their quality of life. Work ing a shorter week can decrease employees' job stability and harm their cha nces for a
12、dva ncing their careers. Four-day employees are likely to be the first to lose their jobs during an economic downturin. They may also be passed over for promoti ons because compa nies might prefer to have five-day employees in man ageme nt positi ons to en sure continu ous coverage and con siste nt
13、supervisi onfor the en tire workweek.TPO2Read ingIn many orga ni zatio ns, perhaps the best way to approach certa in new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack a project offers several adva ntages. First of all, a group of people has a wider range of kn
14、owledge , expertise, and skills than any single in dividual is likely to possess. Also, because of the nu mbers of people in volved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in resp onse to the task assig ned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problem
15、s and issues. Sometimes these creative soluti ons come about because a group is more likely to make risky decisi ons that an in dividual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no sin gle in dividual can be held acco un table i
16、f the decisi on turns out to be wrong.Taking part in a group process can be very rewardi ng for members of the team. Team membersr Vy jwho have a voice in making a decisi on will no doubt feel better about carry ing out the work thatis en tailed by the decisi on tha n they might doing work that is i
17、mposed on them by others. Also, the in dividual team member has a much better cha nee to“ shine ” , to get his or her con tributi onsand ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a team ' overall results can be more far-reach ing and have greater impact tha n what m
18、ight have otherwise bee n possible for the pers on to accomplish or con tribute worki ng alone.Liste ningProfessorNow I want to tell you about what one compa ny found whe n it decided that it would turn over some of its new projects to teams of people, and make the team resp on sible for pla nning t
19、he projects and gett ing the work done. After about six mon ths, the compa ny took a look at how well the teams performed.On virtually every team, some members got almost a "free ride" . . . they did n't con tribute much at all, but if their team did a good job, they nevertheless benef
20、ited from the recognition the team got. And what about group members who worked especially well and who provided a lot of in sight on problems and issues? Well . . . the recog niti on for a job well done went to the group as a whole, no names were named. So it won't surprise you to learn that wh
21、en the real contributors were asked how they felt about the group process, their attitude was just the opposite of what the read ing predicts.Ano ther finding was that some projects just did n't move very quickly. Why? Because it took so long to reach consensus; it took many, many meetings to bu
22、ild the agreement among group members about how they would move the project along. On the other hand, there were other in sta nces where one or two people man aged to become very in flue ntial over what their group did. Sometimes whe n those in flue ncers said "That will n ever work" about
23、 an idea the group was develop ing, the idea was quickly dropped in stead of being further discussed. And the n there was ano ther occasi on whe n a couple in flue ncers convinced the group that a pla n of theirs was "highly creative." And even though some members tried to warn the rest of
24、 the group that the project was moving in directions that might not work, they were basically ignored by other groupmembers. Can you guess the ending to this story? When the project failed, the blame was placed on all the members of the group.TPO3Read ingRembra ndt is the most famous of the seve nte
25、e nth-ce ntury Dutch pain ters. However, there are doubts whether some pain ti ngs attributed to Rembra ndt were actually pain ted by him. One such pain ti ng is known as attributed to Rembra ndt because of its style, and in deed the represe ntati on of the woman' s face isy/enuch like that of p
26、ortraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there areproblems with the pain ti ng that suggest it could not be a work by Rembra ndt.First, there is someth ing incon siste nt about the way the woma n in the portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet t
27、he coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects' cloth ing, would not have beechgaHtynicbnsiste ncy.Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting theseF *
28、 JZ j felements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow-which is not how it appears. Rembra ndt would n eve
29、r have made such an error.Fin ally, exam in atio n of the back of the pain ti ng reveals that it was pain ted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembra ndt ofte n pain ted on wood pan els, no painting known to be by Rembra ndt uses a panel glued together in this way f
30、rom several pieces of wood.For these reasons the painting was removed from th e official catalog of Rembrandt' s paintings inthe 1930s.Liste ningProfessor:Everyth ing you just read about "Portrait of an Elderly Woma n in a White Bonn et" is true, and yet after a thorough re-exam in ati
31、 on of the pain ti ng, a panel of experts has recen tly con cluded that it's in deed a work by Rembra ndt. Here is why.First, the fur collar. X-rays and an alysis of the pigme nts in the paint have show n that the fur collar was n't part of the origi nal painting. The fur collar was pain ted
32、 over the top of the origi nal pain ti ng about a hun dred years after the pain ti ng was made. Why? Some one probably wan ted to in crease the value of the pain ti ng by mak ing it look like a formal portrait of an aristocratic lady.Second, the supposed error with light and shadow. Once the paint o
33、f the added fur color was removed, the original could be seen, in the original painting, the woman is wearing a simple collar of light-colored cloth. The light-colored cloth of this collar reflects light that illuminates part of the woman's face. That's why the face is not in partial shadow.
34、 So in the original painting, light and shadow are very realistic and just what we would expect from Rembra ndt.Fin ally, the wood pan el. It tur ns out that whe n the fur collar was added, the wood panel was also enlarged with extra wood pieces glued to the sides and the top to make the painting mo
35、re grand and more valuable. So the origi nal pain ti ng is actually pain ted on a si ngle piece of wood, as would be expected from a Rembrandt painting. And in fact, researchers have found that the piece of wood in the original form of "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet" is fr
36、om the verysame tree as the wood panel used for ano ther pain ti ng by Rembra ndt, his "Self-portrait with a Hat".TPO4Read ingEn dotherms are an imals such as moder n birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures con sta nt. For in sta nee, huma ns are en dotherms and mai ntai n an i
37、n ternal temperature of 37 C, no matter whether the environment is warm or cold. Because dinosaurs were reptiles, and moder n reptiles are not en dotherms, it was long assumed that dino saurs were not en dotherms. However, dinosaurs differ in many ways from modem reptiles, and there is now considera
38、ble evide nee that dino saurs were, in fact, en dotherms.Polar dino saursOne reason for believing that dinosaurs were endotherms is that dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Polar Regi ons. Only ani mals that can maintain a temperature well above that of the surro unding environment could be act
39、ive in such cold climates.Leg positi on and moveme ntr Vyj fThere is a connection between endothermy and the position and movement of the legs. The physiology of endothermy allows sustained physical activity, such as running. But running is efficie nt only if an ani mal's legs are positi oned un
40、dern eath its body, not at the body's side, as they are for crocodiles and many lizards. The legs of all modern endotherms are underneath the body, and so were the legs of dino saurs. This stro ngly suggests that dino saurs were en dotherms. Haversia n can alsThere is also a conn ecti on betwee
41、n en dothermy and bone structure. The bones of en dotherms usually in clude structures called Haversia n can als. These can als house n erves and blood vessels that allow the living animal to grow quickly, and rapid body growth is in fact a characteristic of endothermy. The presence of Haversian can
42、als in bone is a strong indicator that the animal is an en dotherm, and fossilized bones of dino saurs are usually dense with Haversia n can als.Liste ningProfessor:Many scientists have problems with the arguments you read in the passage. They don't think those argume nts prove that dino saurs w
43、ere en dotherms.Take the polar dino saur argume nt. Whe n dino saurs lived, even the polar regi ons, where dino saur fossils have bee n found, were much warmer tha n today, warm eno ugh duri ng part of the year for ani mals that were not en dotherms to live. And duri ng the mon ths whe n the polar r
44、egi ons were cold, the so-called polar dino saurs could have migrated to warmer areas or hiber nated like many moder n reptiles do. So the prese nce of dino saur fossils in polar regi ons does n't prove the dino saurs were en dotherms.Well, what about the fact that dino saurs have their legs pla
45、ced un der their bodies, not out to the side like crocodiles. That does n't n ecessarily mean dino saurs were high-e nergy en dotherms built for running. There is another explanation for having legs under the body. This body structure supports more weight, so with the legs un der their bodies, d
46、ino saurs can grow to a very large size. Being large had adva ntages for dino saurs, so we don't n eed the idea of en dothermy and running to expla in why dino saurs evolved to have their legs un der their bodies.Ok, so how about bone structure? Many dino saur bones do have Haversia n can als, t
47、hat's true.The dinosaur bones also have growth rings. Growth rings are thickening of the bone that in dicates periods of time when the dino saurs were n't rapidly grow ing. These growth rings are evide nee that dino saurs stopped grow ing or grew more slowly duri ng cooler periods. This patt
48、er n of periodic growth, you know, rapid growth followed by no growth or slow growth, and then rapid growth aga in, is characteristic of ani mals that are n ot en dotherms. Ani mals that mai nta in a constant body temperature year-round as true endotherms do grow rapidly even when the en viro nment
49、becomes cool.TPORead ingAs early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the America n Southwest were no table for their "great houses," massive stone buildi ngs that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeologists
50、have been trying to determ ine how the buildi ngs were used. While there is still no uni versally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories.One theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely reside ntial, with each hous ing hun dreds of people. Supporters of this theory have in
51、 terpreted Chaco great houses as earlier versions of the architecture see n in more rece nt Southwest societies. In particular, the Chaco houses appear strikingly similar to the large, well-known "apartment buildings" at Taos, New Mexico, in which many people have bee n livi ng for cen tur
52、ies.A sec ond theory contends that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies. One of the main crops of the Chaco people was grain maize, which could be stored for long periods of time without spoil ing and could serve as a Ion g-last ing supply of food. The supplies of maize had to be st
53、ored somewhere, and the size of the great houses would make them very suitable for the purpose.A third theory proposes that houses were used as ceremonial cen ters. Close to one house, called Pueblo Alto, archaeologists identified an enormous mound formed by a pile of old material. Excavations of th
54、e mound revealed deposits containing a surprisingly large number of broken pots. This finding has been interpreted as evidenee that people gathered at Pueblo Alto for special ceremonies. At the ceremonies, they ate festive meals and then discarded the pots in which the meals had bee n prepared or se
55、rved. Such cere monies have bee n docume nted for other Native America n cultures.Tty fListe ningProfessor:Unfortunately none of the arguments about what the Chaco great houses were used for is convincing.First, sure, from the outside, the great houses look like later and Native American apartment b
56、ut the in side of the great houses casts serious doubt on the idea that many people lived there. I'll expla in. If hun dreds of people were livi ng in the great houses, the n there would have to be many fireplaces, where each family did its daily cook ing, but there are very few fireplaces. In o
57、ne of the largest great houses, there were fireplaces for only around ten families. Yet there were eno ugh rooms in the great house for more than a hundred families, so the primary function of the houses could n't have bee n reside ntial.Second, the idea that the great houses were used to store
58、grain maize ; un supported by evide nee. It may sound plausible that large empty rooms were used for storage, but excavations of the great houses have not un covered many traces of maize or maize contain ers. If the great houses were used for storage, why isn't there more spilled maize on the fl
59、oor? Why aren't there more rema ins of big contain ers?Third, the idea that the great houses were ceremonial centers isn't well supported either. You know that mound at Pueblo Alto? It contains lots of other materials besides broken pots, stuff you would n't expect from cere moni es. For example, there are large qua ntities of buildi ng materials, san ds, ston es, eve n con structi on tools.This suggests that the mound is just a trashheap of con struct ion material, stuff that was throw n away or not used up whe n a house was being built. The pots in the pile could be regular
