3、and brave;Harry, a beautiful and tale ntedchild who sings dancesand mimes;Mrs. Shelby, a veryreligious woman;Samboand Qimbo and so on. The majorcharacter Uncle Tom who was the most impressive in this no vel was a devout Christia n. He en dured the miserable fate bravely and aroused the whites sympat

4、hy for slaves with hisChrists sacrifice and the tolera nee of returni ng good for evil.This novel focuses on the distinctivepersonalitiesof Uncle Tom deeply in flue need by Christia nity and the importa nt role Un ele Toms Cabin play ing on aboliti on; and the Signi fiea nee of “ Unele Tom ” to the

5、harmonious worlds development, and the effeet on moder n people.In the book, at the beginning, the author presents us a very beautiful image of a rather harm onious family who live a happy life. However, that beautifulimage eouldnt last long,the darkness eame soon. The master of this happy family, U

6、n ele Tom was arran ged in to a diffieult situati on. As Shelby, the not eruel master, he has in eurred serious debts- prompti ng him sell some slaves to avoid finaneial ruin, so Unele Tom, Shelbys loyal serva nt since ehildhood was sold to Mr. Haley, the slave trader. Unele Tom remainedloyal to his

7、 master,despite his betrayal and the risk of death at the eruel hands of a new master. The slaves at the pla ntati on were very mournful, but Tom remained plaeid and tried to read his Bible for eomfort. On the steamboat to New Orlea ns, where Tom was to be sold, Tom befriended an angelie little girl

8、,“ Little Eva ” St.Clare. Un ele Tom saved the five-year-old beauty from drowning,and she convineed her father to buy Tom for herown family. I n her family, Tom enjoyed his life beeause of the girls love; Toms conten tme nt does not last, however, beeauseEva soon falls ill. Dying, Eva asked Mr. St.

9、Clare to free Tom after her death. But Mr. St. Clare is so sad by her death that he n ever legally freed Tom before he himself was killed trying to mediate a barroom scuffle. Mrs. St. Clare sold the slaves to settle her husba nds debts and Tom was sold to Simon Legree who was so viole nt that beat h

10、is slaves brutally. At last, whe n Mr. Shelby, fin ally found Un cle Tom, he was almost died. AfterTom was dead and buried, Shelby went back and freed his slaves.As we all can see that Uncle Toms Cabin was an anti-slavery novel and it was even considered as one factor that caused the Civil War. In t

11、he novel, the slaves were sold from one place to ano ther freque ntly, and their fate was tragic, with no exception- just like Uncle Tom, no matter he was under the control of kind masters or evil masters, he cant escape the misfortune of being sold from one master to ano ther. We cant see any huma

12、n right of them, so terrible.As some one said, with more people realizi ng the in huma nity of slavery in the 19th cen tury, slavery became one of the most importa nt issues and it became more viole nt year by year in Americansociety. However, slavery was notabolished irrevocably un til ratificati o

13、n of the 13th Ame ndme nt to the Co nstitutio n in 1865, followi ng the Civil War. After the passage of Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this no vel Un cle Toms Cabin which publicized the evil of slavery to a wide audie nee.Now we are in the 21st century, we may never come across such kind of thing.
