2、ioni want to thank naomi for those inspiring wordsi want to thank your outstanding, fabulous principal, sheila harritywho has done so much to make this school a successlet me just saywhen you're the national high school principal of the yearyou're doing something rightthere are a lot of prin

3、cipals out thereand we could not be prouder of what she's doingi want to thank your mayor, joseph pettyyour outstanding governor and a great friend of mine, deval patrickwonderful congressman, jim mcgovernand most of all, i want to thank the class of 2014thank you for allowing me to be part of y

4、our special dayand you all look greatand i want to thank all the parents and all the grandparentsand the family and the friends - this is your day, tooyou know, part of the reason i'm here is because i've got to practicebecause malia is graduating in two yearsso i'm trying to get used to

5、 not choking upand crying and embarrassing herso this is sort of my trial run herei have to say, i do not remember my high school graduation speakeri have no idea who it wasi'm sure i was thinking about the party after graduationi don't remember the party eitheri'm just telling the truth

6、 hereyou will remember the speaker at this graduationbecause there's a lot of secret service aroundnot because of anything that i say that's so inspiringbut i know this day has been a long time comingtogether, you made it through freshman initiationyou survived mr. o'connor's english

7、 classwhich i understand is pretty tougheverybody has got to have, like, a mr. o'connor in their lifejust to kind of straighten you outand now it's the big dayalthough i notice that none of you are wearing your idsrumor has it some of you haven't been wearing them for yearstoday i'm

8、exercising my power as presidentand granting an official pardonfor all of you who did not follow the rules thereconsider it my graduation gift to youi know a lot of folks watching at home todaywill see all of you in your caps and your gownsand they'll think, well, maybe this isjust another class

9、 of graduates at another american high schoolbut i'm here todaybecause there is nothing ordinaryabout worcester tech or the class of 2014you have set yourselves apartthis high school has set itself apartover the past four yearssome of you have learned how to take apart an engineand put it back t

10、ogether againsome of you have learned how to run a restaurantor build a house, or fix a computerand all of you are graduating today not just with a great educationbut with the skills that will let you start your careersand skills that will make america strongertogether, you're an example of what

11、's possiblewhen we stop just talking about giving young people opportunitywhen we don't just give lip serviceto helping you compete in the global economyand we actually start doing itthat's what's happening right here in worcesterand that's why i'm here todayi mean, i like al

12、l of you, and i'm glad to be with youbut the thing i really want to do ismake sure that what we've learned here at this high schoolwe can lift up for the entire nationi want the nation to learn from worcester techof course, your journey is just beginningtake a look around at all the smiles f

13、rom the parentsand the grandparents and all the family memberseverything your families have done has beenso that you could pursue your dreamsso that you could fulfill your potentialeverybody here has a story of some sacrificethat's been made on your behalfand whether you're heading to colleg

14、e, or the militaryor starting your careeryou're not going to be able to take them with you nowsome of your moms and dads probablywish they could hang onto you a little bit longersome of you, maybe they're ready to get rid of youregardless, thoughyou are now entering into a stage where it'

15、;s up to youand what you can do isremember some of the lessons that you've learned hereand carry them with you, wherever you're goingand i want to talk about three of those lessonsa couple of which have already been mentioned by the previous speakersfirst of all, i want you to remember that

16、each of us is only herebecause somebody somewhere invested in our successsomebody invested in usi know that's true for mei was raised by a single mom with the help of my grandparentswe didn't have a lot of money growing upyou know, at times, we struggledwhen my mom was going to school at the

17、 same timeas she was raising my sister and me, we had to scrape to get bybut we had a family who loved me and my sisterand i had teachers who cared about meand ultimatelywith the help of a community and a country that supported mei was able to get a good educationand i was able to get grants and stu

18、dent loansand opportunities opened upand all of this happenedbecause people saw something in me that i didn't always see in myselfand that's not just true for me, that's true for michellewho grew up the daughter of a blue-collar workerand a mom who stayed at home and then became a secret

19、arynever went to college themselvesthat's true for duvalwho grew up initially on the south side of chicagoand didn't have a lotand somebody reached out and gave him a hand upit's true of this citythis is a town that's always been home to smart people with big ideasthe mayor mentioned

20、 robert goddard, the father of the modern rockethe was born here, performed some of the earliest tests on rocketrybut worcester has also prepared its workersfor the jobs that those big ideas would bringand that's why they openeda technical school here more than a century agowith a class of 29 ir

21、onworkers and 23 woodworkersand that school became worcester techalong the way, the economy changedinnovation made it possible for businesses to do more with lessthe internet meant those companies could do it anywhereschools like this were finding it harder to prepare studentswith the skills that bu

22、sinesses were looking forand then a guy named ted coghlin came alongand ted is known as the "godfather" of worcester techbecause about 10 years agohe set out to make this school what he knew it could bea place where businesses train new workersand young people get the keys to a brighter fu

23、tureand he put his heart and soul into itand eventually, that's what happenedted helped raise money for a new buildingand the state and federal government chipped in, as welland businesses helped create everythingfrom an auto service center to a bank right inside the schooland top-notch teachers

24、 got on boardled by principal harrity and the assistant principals hereand an outstanding superintendentand before long, worcester tech was on its wayto becoming one of the best schools in this cityand today, so many students want to come to worcester techthat there's a waiting list more than 40

25、0 names longthe number of students scoring "proficient" or "advanced" in mathhas gone up 100 percentin english more than 200 percentninety-five percent of students now graduate in four yearsand just as impressivemany of you are leaving here with more than a diplomayou're alre

26、ady certified as nursing assistantsand emts and home health aidesand preparing to become it associatesand with the credits that you've earnedsome of you are already on your way to a college diplomaand as ted saidour students deserve the bestso we can help them become the bestfor their future and

27、 oursthe point is, a lot of people made an investment in youi can't imagine a better investmentbut as you experience your success and as you experience setbacksyou need to remember everythingthat's been put into making sure that you had opportunitywhich brings me to the second thingi hope yo

28、u remember when you leave hereyou're going to also have to give backthis community invested in youyou've got to make sure that you use those giftswhen my secretary of education, arne duncancame to worcester tech earlier this yearhe said he had never seen a school more openif you live near th

29、e schoolyou can come in and get your car detailed for a fractionof what it would cost someplace elseso i'm giving a little free advertisingto the detailing operation hereyou can eat a meal cooked by students in the culinary arts programone teacher called the hair salon the "city's best

30、kept secret"your veterinary clinic cares for about 250 pets a monthso i could have brought bo and sunny hereyou guys would have taken care of themso worcester tech isn't separate from the broader communityyou're a vital part of the communityso part of what you've learned here is tha

31、t we are at our bestwe are strongest when we are working togetherand when we're looking out for one anotherand we have responsibilities towards each otherand all of us have contributions to makeyou're giving back to folks who gave you so muchand whatever you do next, i hope you keep giving b

32、ackthat may mean staying in worcesterand working for one of the companies that helped train youif it means going to college or the militaryor using your skills to help more studentsget the same opportunities that you've had hereno matter what it is that you do, no matter what path you takei want

33、 to make sure that you understandthe incredible leadership that we now expect from youi understand that every year at exam timeyou hear from a motivational speakerand one of them this year was colin powellbecause when you're getting ready to take a testit never hurts to get a pep talk from a gen

34、eralbut the best part is thatyou decide to do the same thing for younger kidsso this class - those of you in the national honor societyrolled out the red carpet for students at nearby chandler elementaryand so those younger kids left here feeling fired upinspired by your examplelooking up to you, im

35、agining that they could do what you didand they're going to keep on looking up to youand there are going to be people across the countrywho are watching youand when they see you succeed, when they see you working hardwhen they see you overcoming setbacksthat's going to inspire them as wellan

36、d that brings me to my final pointwhich is i hope you leave here todaybelieving that if you can make itthen there shouldn't be any kid out here who can't make itevery child in america, no matter what they look likeor where they grow up, what their last name isthere's so much talent out t

37、hereand every single childas ted understood when he helped transform this schoolevery single child should have the opportunity like you have hadto go as far as your talents and hard work will take youi've seen you do it, so we know it's possiblenow, it's a challenging timei think sometim

38、es i worry thatyour generation has grown up in a cynical timein the aftermath of a great recession, in the aftermath of two warswe live in a culture that so often focuses on conflict and controversyand looks at the glass half empty instead of half fulland you're graduating at a time when you'

39、;ll no longer be competingjust with people across town for good jobsyou're going to be competing with the rest of the worldbut when i meet young people like youi am absolutely certainwe are not just going to out-compete the rest of the worldwe are going to win because of youbecause we are americ

40、ans, that's what we dowe don't settlewe outworkwe out-innovatewe out-hustle the competitionand when we do, nobody can beat usand that's what you've shown at this schoolnot just helping a few kidsgo as far as their hard work will take themi want all of you to be part of the processof

41、helping all our young people achieve their god-given potentialand as presidentmy job is to make sure every child in america gets that chanceand deval patrick's job isto make sure that everybody in the commonwealth gets that chanceand the mayor, his focus ismaking sure everybody in this town gets

42、 that chanceevery community is differentbut if worcester can bring teachers and businessand entire communities together for the sake of our young peoplethen other places can, tooand that's why i've challenged high schools all across the countryto do what you're doing herebetter prepare s

43、tudents for the demands of the global economywe're getting started this year with a competition thatpairs schools and employers and collegesto combine quality education with real-world skillsas part of that initiative, i launched something called connectedworking with the private sector to conne

44、ct america's studentsto high-speed broadband and advanced technologyjust like you've got here at worcester techalready, companies have committed to donate $2 billion to this effortand starting later this weekschools and teachers and students will be able to go to whitehand access res

45、ources in time for the new school yearbecause i want to encourage more schools to do what you're doingyou've set a standardyou've set a barmore schools can do it across the countryif you're going to collegei also want to make sure thatwhen you graduate you don't have a mountain o

46、f debtso we're not only working to make college more affordablewe're working to help more studentspay back their loans that they take out when they go to collegeit is not fair to students who do everything rightto get saddled with debtthat they have to pay off not just for yearsbut in some c

47、ases decadeswe can do better than thatand even though they had votes and they couldn't make iti want to give a plug to a couple peoplesenator elizabeth warren and congressman john tierneyboth from massachusettswho introduced billsthat would make it easier for students to repay their student loan

48、sit's the same idea we usedto make it easier for your parents to pay off their mortgagesnow today, that idea was defeated by republicans in congresswhich was frustrating, especiallywell, don't boojust remember to voteso i know that it's frustrating for parentsit's frustrating for stu

49、dentswho are working hard and doing everything rightthere are too many politicians in washingtonwho don't have the right prioritieswe need to straighten them outand maybe they forgot where they came fromand who invested in them along the wayand when a bill to help you pay off your college doesn&

50、#39;t passit's a disservice not only to your generation but to our historyas a nation that strivesto put quality education within the reach of every americanso we're going to have to keep on putting pressure on congressbut in the meantime, where congress won't acti'm going to do what

51、ever i can on my ownso on monday, i announced executive actionsthat are going to help students like you find the right optionsand give millions of americanswho are already making their loan payments a chanceto cap those repayments at 10 percent of their incomebecause a quality education shouldn'

52、t be something that other kids getit should be something that every kid getsand that has to be a priority for this countryi tell you all thisnot just because you stand to benefit from changes in lawsbut because you're going to haveto be a part of helping to shape the lawyou're going to have

53、to shape public opinionyou're going to have remember everybody who invested in youyou're going to have to rememberthe experience of being part of this incredible communityand then, when you go out into the worldwhether you are a businesspersonor you are in the military, or you are an academi

54、c, or a doctoror whatever it is that you're doingyou're also going to be a citizenyou're also going to be somebodywho has a voice in how this country operatesand you've got to push so that others get the same chance you didand making sure that every young personhas the same opportuni

55、ties you've had - it won't be easyprogress takes commitmentit takes hard workwe have to fight through the cynicismit's going to take work from parents and from teachersand members of the community and from studentsbut i know we can do it - and i know it because of youif melinda blanchard

56、 can get so good at welding thata bunch of college kids ask her help building a solar-paneled housefor a competition in chinai know that we can get more young people excited about learningif greg carlson can helpthe robotics team at worcester tech win the world championshipand still find time to mentora robotics team at the middle school where he started outthen i know we can helpguarantee every child in america a quality educationif derek murphy can
