2、t is the largest and most well reserved imperial reside nee in Chi na. The con struct ion of the palace started in 1406 in the Ming dyn asty. It took 14years to complete. For five cen turies, it continued to be the reside nee of 23 emperors till 1911. .At prese nt, the palace is an elaborate museum

3、that prese nts the Chin esetraditional architecture and court treasures . In 1987, it was listed as apart of world cultural heritage by UNES CONow standing in front of us is the Meridian Gate which is the main entrance for the Former Imperial Palace. It is so named because the emperor considered him

4、self the ‘Son of the Heave n’ and the Palace the cen ter of the uni verse, hence the n orth-south a_is as the Meridia n line.Bey ond the Meridia n Gate we can see the Inner Golde n Water River. Why did people dig a river cha nnel here It has two reas ons: first, it functions as decorati

5、on for the imperial palace; sec on d, it is used for the fire con trol. The river is spa nned by five bridges, which symbolize the five virtues preached by Confucius: benevolenee, righteousness, intelligenee, and fidelity. The river takes the shape of a bow and the no rth-south a_is is its arrow. Th

6、is layout shows that the emperors ruled the country on behalf of Heave n.Now we have bee n in the outer court of the palace. At the north end of the courtyard ,one after another, stand the three main halls: the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserv ing Harmony.

7、Now let&rsq uo;s visit the Hall of Supreme Harmony first. The Hall of Supreme Harmony , recta ngular in shape, 27 meter in height, 2300 square meters in area, is the largest and the most importa nt hall in the palace comple_. It is also China&rsq uo;s largest e_isti ng woode n structure palace. This

8、 hall used to be the throne hall for ceremonies, such as the Spring Festival, the emperors birthday and enthron eme nt, and the dispatch of gen erals to battles. On such coact ions, there would be an imperial guard of honor sta nding in front of the Hall and e_te nding all the way to the Meridian Ga

9、te. Just imagine, what a grand sight it was.The hall of the Cen tral Harmony is smaller and square with win dows on all sides. Im with great pleasure to be your tourist guide and from now on I will show you around Shenyang Imperial Palace, where the foun der of Qing Dyn asty Nuerhachi and his son Huan gtaiji lived.Sh

11、enyang Imperial Palace, Fuling tomb and Zhaoling Tomb made in the early period of Qing Dynasty are the three famous historical sites in Shenyang. Shenyang Imperial Palace with a history of over 360 years started in 1625 and was roughlyaccomplished in 1636 during the reign of Nuerhachi and Huangtaiji

12、. After them four emperors of Qi ng Dyn asty had come back from Beiji ng to this palace for 10 times and en larged its area and added its build in gs. They were Emperor Kan g_i, Qianlong, Jiaq ing and Daogua ng. Therefore, un til 1783 the palace was fin ally fini shed. Shenyang Imperial Palace is on

13、e of the two royal palaces well kept in China. The other one is Forbidde n City in Beiji ng. Shenyang Imperial Palace was entitled Historic Culture Relics Preserved Buildings in 1961 by the State Council. This palace is an emperor museum combining the architectural styles of the minorities of Man, H

14、an and Mon golia. This palace covers an area of 60,000 square meters,compris ing over 20 courtyards, 300 houses and 70 buildi ngs. The whole con struct ion is divided into three secti ons: the east, middle and west.First lets pay a visit to the buildings in the buildings in the middle section. The l

15、ayout of middle section is similar to a Chinese compound with three courtyards. The first courtyard is the office area. It starts from the Grand Qi ng Gate on the south and ends at Holy Admi nistratio n Hall. From Phoeni_ Tower to Purity and Tranquility Hall is the residential area. They all lay out

16、 on the same line. The main entrance to the palace is the Grand Qing Gate, also called Meridia n Gate because the emperor considered himself as the son of Heaven and the palace should be the cen ter of uni verse .The Grand Qi ng Gate was built i n 1632 and is was the place where the civilia n offici

17、als and military ministers to present themselves before the emperor daily .The special feature of the gate is the tile color. They are all yellow tiles but engraved with green borders. Yellow symbolizes the gro und and the royal right while gree n represe nts sea and mountains. The comb in ati on of

18、 them mean s con trolli ng the vast areas on the earth. The buildi ng to the east of Grand Qing Gate is called An cestor Temple (Taimiao) with yellow tile roof, where Nuerhachis desce ndants offered sacrifices to their an cestors for bless in gs.So An cestor Temple is the mostimportant. Please follo

19、w me into the gate. This path in the middle links the gate to HolyAdministration Hall with Flying Dragon Pavilion ( Feilongge)and Flying Phoeni_ Pavilion(Xia ngfen gge) on each side. The Hall of Holy Adm ini strati on is the main buildi ng in the middle part of the palace and it was the center of th

20、e military, administrative affairs in early QingDyn asty and had wit nessed many n ati onal ceremoni es. Flying Drag on and Flying Phoe ni_ Pavili ons were for stori ng music in strume nts. Holy Admi nistratio n Hall was Emperor Huan gtaijis office. In front of the hall are Rigui and Jia nglia ng, w

21、hich were used as measure in strume nts andsupposed to be the symbol of unity. In accident construction, office area is usually in the front part and residential area is in the rear.Since we have visited the place where the Emperors worked and now well pay a visit to the place where empress and con

22、cub ines lived. Here is the Phoe ni_ Tower. It served as an entrance to the rear chambers and also the en terta inment area of Huan gtaiji and his con cub in es, and some gatheri ngs or banq uets were held occasi on ally. The tower was built on a terrace 3.8 meters tall. It was the tallest build ing

23、 in Shenyang at that time .It is amaz ing watch ing sun rise in the morning on the tower and Phoe ni_ Sun rise is one of the famous Eight fasc in ati ng Scenes inShenyang. Look upward, we will see a board hanging up on Phoeni_ Tower ,on which Emperor Qia nlong in scribed Ziqido nglai, which meant th

24、e Qi ng Dyn asty in Beiji ng immigrated from Shen gji ng, the old n ame for Shenyang to the east .There are 24staircases leadi ng to Phoe ni_ Tower representing 24 seasonal divisions points in Chinese lunar calendar.In Shenyang Imperial palace chambers are higher than halls, which is contrary to the

25、 architectural style in Forbidde n City in Beiji ng. Walki ng through the tower are the rear chambers. The one on the north in the middle was called Purity and Tranquility Hall, which was prepared for emperor and empress. The other four lying on both sides were for con cub ines .Purity and Tranquili

26、ty Hall has five rooms and the First from the east was where Huangraiji passed away here at the age of 52 without any disease. His thro ne passed to his ninth son, Fuli ng. In early Qing Dyn asty, the con struct ion style was summed up like this: bag-like house, zigzag bed and chi mney sitt ing on t

27、he ground. The main buildi ngs here were differe nt from other buildi ngs with a door was ope ned in the wall of the east room and the other rooms were conn ected together like a bag. The zigzag beds, made of mud and brick and with fire and smoke tunnels were called kang in Chin ese. In order to get

28、 heat and keep room warm in win ter, tunn els was made un der the ground of Purity and Tranquility Hall to put fire and smoke through .Now notice the pole standing on the gro und for smoke through.Now notice the pole standing right in the middle of the courtyard. This red pole is called Suolun pole,

29、 or Holy Pole. Its round tin container near the top was filled with food for feeding crows. It was said that Nuerhachi was saved by crows. Crows are considered sacred in Manchurian culture though in Chinese culture crows are regarded as birds bringing bad luck. Emperor Huan gtaiji had four con cub i

30、n es. Among the four con cub ines Chen was loved best by Huan gtaiji and Con cub ine Zhua ng was the wisest and the mother of the ne_t emperor, Fuli ng. Therefore, she had a special status among the con cub in es. The only chi mney was built on the rear of Purity and Tranq uility hall from the groun

31、d with 11 layers, represe nting the 11emperors from Emperor Huan gtaiji to the last emperor Puyi. This chi mney was the highest one at that time. In Chin ese, the sound of chi mney t on g is the same as that of uni ty. To thenorth further is rear courtyard called Yuhua Garde n. After visiti ng the m

32、iddle sect ion of the palace, we come to the eastern sect ion. Its represe ntativebuild ing is the Great Admini strati on Hall, flanked by Ten Princes Pavilions. This part was built in 1625, and they were the earliest buildi ng in Shenyang Imperial Palace. Great Admi nistratio n Hall is the place ce

33、re monies and han dled state affairs. Great Adm ini stratio n Hall was built with eight sides represe nting the style of military tent and also Eight Banner military system.Now please look at the ten pavilions, five on each side, which were the offices of the commanders at that time. Here I will giv

34、e you an introduction to the military system of early Manchurian Period. Nuerhachi divided his troops in four parts and each part was identified by the color of its bann er .There were the four kinds ofbanner: red, blue, white and yellow banner. As the troops e_pa nded quickly, ano ther four parts w

35、ere added and therefore ano ther four kinds of banner were n eeded .By the n there were altogether eight kinds of banner. This army was therefore well known for Eight Banner Army.The last part of Shenyang Imperial Palace is the wester n sect ion, built from 1782 to 1783 and duri ng Emperor Qianlongs

36、 reig n. Its main con struct ion is Book Source Pavili on(Wen suge)with Theater Platform and Good Desce ndan t-be nefit ing Hall (Jiay intang) in front, Prosperity Adm ini strati on Study( Yang_in zhai) and Nine Halls beh ind. Book Source Pavili on (wen suge)was specially designed for storing the encyclopedia compiled at that time, Si Ku Quan Shu. This encyclopedia collected most of the books in Chinese history .Its complication started i
