23、 pacing elementsome timing device which lets the student know how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this simply by looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and noting clown the page number you have reached. 26、ading speed, stop after every chapter (if you are reading a novel) or every section or group of ten or twelve pages (if it is a text-book) and ask yourself a few questions about what you have been reading. If you find you have lost the thread of the story, or you cannot remember dearly the details o

27、f what was said, reread the section or chapter. You can also try lightning speed exercise from time to time. Take four or five pages of the general interest book you happen to be reading and read them as fast as you possibly can. Do not bother about whether you understand or not. Now go back and rea

28、d them at what you feel to be your normal w. p. m. rate, the rate at which you can comfortably understand. After a lightning speed reading through (probably 600 w. p. m.) you will usually find that your normal speed has increasedperhaps by as much as 50- 100 w. p. m. This is the technique sportsmen

The staying power of the look-say or whole-word method of teaching beginning reading is perhaps the most flagrant example of this failure to instruct effectively. The whole-word approach to reading stresses t

45、lassrooms and with the concept that children have to be developmentally ready to begin reading. Before 1963, no major publisher put out anything but these Run- Spot-Run readers. However, in 1955, Rudolf Flesch touched off what has been called the great debate in beginning reading. In his best-seller

46、 Why Johnny Cant Read, Flesch indicted(控诉)the nations public schools for miseducating students by using the look-say method. He said-and mere scholarly studies by Jeane Chall and Rovert Dykstra later confirmed-that another approach to beginning reading, founded on phonics(声学), is far superior. Syste

47、matic phonics first teaches children to associate letters and letter combinations with sounds; it then teaches them how to blend these sounds together to make words. Rather than building up a relatively limited vocabulary of memorized words, it imparts a code by which the pronunciations of the vast
