3、vil spirits. This tradition has been _intained to this day as we still have _ny parks and schools walled off from the public. I grew up at the foot of the city walls, and Ive loved them sin _ my childhood. For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world. My per _ption, howeve

4、r, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a s _nic area of my city. My class _tes and I were walking with some international students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees, which formed a huge canopy above our heads. Suddenly an internation

5、al student asked me, Where is the entran _ to the Eastern Suburbs? Were already in the Eastern Suburbs, I replied. He seemed taken aback, I thought you Chinese have walls for everything. His re _rk set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to jails, while I insisted that th

6、e Eastern Suburbs were one of the _ny pla _s in China that had no walls. That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student. For instan _, he told me that universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls; the campuses were just part of the cities. I

7、have to admit that we do have _ny walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede Chinas development. Let me give you an example. A year ago, when I was working on a

8、 term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying, You cant borrow this book, you are not a student here. In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan buying a copy; meanwhile, the copy in law sc

9、hool was gathering dust on the shelf. At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university has started not only to unify its libraries but also link them up with libraries of other universities, so my experien _ will not be repeated. Barriers will be repla _d by bridges. Through an inter-li

10、brary loan system, we will have aess to books from any library. With globalization, with China integrated into the world, I believe _ny of these intangible walls will be knocked down. I know globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. But one thing is for

11、 sure: it draws our attention to Chinas tangible and intangible walls and for _s us to examine their roles in the modern world. And how about the ancient walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite. My city, like Bei _g and other cities, is actually _ a great effor

12、t to preserve the walls. These walls attract not only historians and archeologists but also _ny schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage. Walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, th

13、ey would be proud to see such great change in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization. As everyone knows,English is very important today.It has been used everywhere in the

14、 world.It has bee the most mon language on Inter and for international trade. If we can speak English well,we will have more chan _ to sueed.Because more and more people have taken noti _ of it,the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed. But for myself,I learn Eng

15、lish not only because of its importan _ and its usefulness,but also because of my love for it.When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world.When I read English novels,I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the

16、translation.When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words.When I write English,I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese. I love English,it gives me a colorful dream.I hope I can travel around the world one day. With my good English, I can _ke friends with _ny people f

There have been thousands of explanations as for the word friend,but i resolutely think that there is the best definition to explain it,which is trust.

A young _n named pi sia was senten _d to death, because of having offended the tyrant. pi sia was a filial son,and he asked to see his old mother before death. The king promised him, but set down the condition

21、that he must find another person to be in prison instead of him. The condition was so critical that it was almost impossible to be realized. But pi sia did find such a _n, who was his friend named dameng. Then pi sia went home to bid farewell with mother as he wished. Days passed quickly, and the te

22、rm of impriso _ent was near at hand, but pi sia had not turned back yet. Most people as _rtained that pi sia had de _ived his friend. It was a rainy day when demeng was sent to the execution ground, all persons watching around laughed at him, but demeng himself was not worried at all. The rope was h

23、anging on his neck, and just at the critical moment, one person ran quickly through the rain shouting loudly,please wait, Im ing! it was pi sia who turned back in time. This was the most moving curtain in the world. demeng took no care of himself in order to help his friend realize the duty, whose k

24、ind of spirit was moved one to tears. While pi sia did not hesitate to take life as the pri _ for performing the promise, whose kind of courage was also rare to meet. My dear friends, do you know why demeng was so calm before death? the reason was that he believed his friend pi sia would not do such

25、 despicable thing as de _iving friends. This depended on the strength of trust. This is a true story that is enough to shock everyone. especially to contemporary people who are surrounded by the benefit of themselves,it is more worth of pondering. friendship is the precious deposits of the hu _n wor

However, in the modern society that regards the real interest as the most supreme power , friendship bees fragile and stingy .it is mon that good friends known several years fall out to bee enemies, and the friendship also bees the chip of business. In fact friendship wil

Good morning la _s and gentlemen: The title of my speech today is The Doors that Are Open to Us . The other day my aunt paid me a visit. She was overjoyed. I got the highest _rk in the mid-term

33、 examination! she said. Dont be surprised! My aunt is indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45. Last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time _nagement course in a college. This was the wisest decision I have ever _de, she said proudly

34、 like a teenage girl. To her, college is always a right pla _ to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always _ke her feel young. Compared with the late 70s, she says, now college students have _ny doors. My aunt cannot help but recall her first college experien _ in 1978 when college doors began to be r

35、e-opened after the Cultural Revolution. She was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study Chinese literature, and a few years later, the gover _ent sent her to work in a TV factory. I was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choi _ in her _jor and job. Look at us today

36、! So _ny doors are open to us! I believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. And my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities. The first door I see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that

As for myself, I am an English _jor, but I _y also go to lectures on history. To me, if college education in the past emphasized spe

38、cialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-rounded development of each individual. So all the fine achievements of hu _n civilization are open to us. The second door is the door to the outside world. Learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries. My aunt remembers her previous college d

39、ays as monotonous and even calls her generation frogs in a well. But today, as the world bees a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other. I have _ny fellow international class _tes, and I am applying to an exchange program with a univ

40、ersity abroad. As for my aunt, she is planning to get an MBA degree in the United Kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her _sters degree in biochemistry.
