Recycling,

2、as one of the most probably assessable ways to improve the environment, has been experimented in York. Although residents may know the importance of recycling, a lack of awareness could lead residents forget to recycle. Meanwhile, the recycling actions are possibly limited because of the ufficiency

3、of facilities. Both the awareness and facilities seem to be the main factors to achieve the expectation of the locals about recycling. Therefore, this research was motivated by the need to find effective solutions to enhance the facilities and improve the awareness of citizens. Based on the data fro

4、m a questionnaire, this report states the potential recycling problems which probably exist in York, and then focus on the solutions to tackle the problems mentioned above.MethodPreparing workAn article named Rubbish, Waste and Recycling on the website of York Council (xxxx) helped the researchers t

5、o acquire an amount of information. Initially, York Household Waste Recycling Centre Permit Scheme (HWRC) was realized. In the second place, the researchers also learnt about the types of facilities for recycling in York as well as the concept Zero Waste York (ZWY) put forward by the local council.

6、The research was done by interviewing twenty local residents selected at random in the city centre to answer a questionnaire on Sunday 14 August.Questionnaire designOur questionnaire was set in the form of eight multiple choices, in order to enable focused responses and optimize the response rate, w

7、hich examined the authors assumptions and hypothesis. There are three further questions were designed to observe the main point of the questionnaire. Five of the questions are relevant to awareness and the others are related to facilities.PilotingAfter drafting the questionnaire, the researchers reg

8、arded some students in other classes as the residents and asked them to answer questions in order to conduct the interviews effectively.In this case, some important problems were found out which were helpful for project work. The researchers realized that so professional were some of the questions t

9、hat it is confusing for the interviewees when they were listening to the questions. For example, the York HWRC Permit Scheme and ZWY. Having known that, the researchers interpreted the meanings of the difficult words to enable them to understand.Results1. Results of awarenessAccording to pie chart 1

10、 below, almost 60% of the participants said that they do not know the York HWRC Permit Scheme. Only ten percent of interviewees indicated that they knew it and used it. In addition, York Council (xxxx) put forward the concept ZWY which is probably an encouraging motivation for residents to recycle (

11、See appendix2). However, only 15% of citizens knew it. In response to Q4, the researchers provided six types of waste and all of them should be recycled, yet only four of the interviewees recognized them. 14、esting to note that all results of the research probably support our hypothesis: lacking of awareness and facilities might be the most significant factors to affect the recycling. It is true that these two schemes, the York HWRC Permit Scheme and ZWY, which were put forward by the local council coul

15、d not only encourage local residents to recycle, but also give a expectation about recycling of York. However, according to the pie chart 1 and 2 (See appendix 2), the majority of participants indicated that they never heard about them. Therefore, local government could spread the recycling informat

16、ion more frequently, from once a year to at least once a month because government is the most common way to find out the recycling schemes (See Q2 or Results 3). Once the local residents improve the awareness, the more motivation encourages them to recycle.What is more, the other solution is to offe

17、r York, especially the city centre, with more recycling facilities. As the first participant (xxxx) indicated that York, as a famous tourist city, has lots of visitors every day, more recycling facilities could be put in the city centre to make a contribution to the environment. Then, more visitors

18、might be attracted.ConclusionThis research aims to the lacking of awareness and facilities of recycling and try to find effective solutions to tackle the problems by using designed questionnaire. During the research, a quantity of knowledge about local environment and recycling situation was acquire

19、d; another crucial practical implication is that the whole process is beneficial to improve the researchers speaking and communicating. Nevertheless, a number of significant limitations need to be considered. Firstly, with a small sample size (20 interviewees), it cannot cover all opinions and point
