Born in England in 1886, George Mallory first “climbed” the village church tower at the age of seven. His reputation grew at Winchester College, where he distinguished himself as an athlete. At 18, he made his first Alpine climb, returning to the Alps again and again in the next six years to perfect his unique climbing style and gain valuable experience.Between 1915 and 1920, Mallory found himself tired of his ordinary life, though he had been the father of three children by then. His restlessness mirrored the era of mad exploration in which he lived, an era in which Mount Everest was indeed “the last frontier”. Because of his reputation for climbing, he was asked to participate in the first Everest expedition in 1921, which allowed him to make a living by doing what he loved best. That first Everest expedition reached 7,010 meters; a following one in 1922 reached 8,301 meters but was ruined by the tragic deaths of seven staff workers in an avalanche(雪崩), an accident for which Mallory felt partially responsible. Frustrated, Mallory did not intend to return to Everest, but a trip to New York City to lecture about his Everest experiences restored his enthusiasm. The New York trip was also where the often-asked question “Why climb Everest?” caused Mallorys now-legendary answer- “Because its there”.In 1924, the third Everest expedition broke the previous climbing record, reaching 8,534 meters. Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine made an attempt at the summit but disappeared in heavy weather and never returned. It seemed certain that they had perished on the mountain, but whether they reached the summit before they died is unknown.75 years later, in 1999, Mallorys body was found by Conrad Anker, an American rock climber. Clues found on his body gave searchers some understanding of what might have happened, but the puzzling mystery of “Did he make it?” remains. Now, a movie named The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest attempts both to solve the mystery and to give us a deeper appreciation of Mallory.24. What do we know about the second Everest expedition?A. The climbing team was made up of seven members.B. The climbers were badly equipped and most of them died.C. Mallory somewhat blamed himself for the accident.D. Mallory went on his New York trip before it.25. Mallory took part in the 1924 expeditionB. Mallory reached the top of Mount EverestC. Anker really found Mallorys bodyD. Anker successfully conquered Mount Everest27. What do we know from the passage?A. As a college student, Mallory mainly studied sports.B. In Mallorys time people crazily explored Mount Everest.C. Mallory and Irvine were together when they died.D. The new movie focuses on Mallory and his last expedition.C Most people think alcohol isnt a good thing. One of the most debated issues about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who dont drink tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard explanation for this finding is this: many of those who give up alcohol are actually former hard-core drunks who had already had health problems associated with drinking before stopping. But a new paper suggests that abstaining(戒除)from alcohol does tend to increase ones risk of dying, even when you leave former problem drinkers out. The most shocking part? Abstainers mortality rates(死亡率) are higher than those of heavy drinkers.Moderate(适度的) drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates. Moderate alcohol use is thought to improve heart health, circulation and sociability, which can be important because people who are isolated(孤立) dont have as many family members and friends who can notice and help treat health problems. But why would abstaining from alcohol lead to a shorter life? Its true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive. And people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors. But even after controlling nearly all imaginable factors - socioeconomic status, number of close friends and so on - the researchers found that over a 20-year period, mortality rates were highest for those who were not current drinkers, second highest for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers.Though heavy drinking is associated with higher risk for many diseases, heavy drinkers are less likely to die than people who dont drink. One important reason is that alcohol strengthens social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health. Nondrinkers show greater signs of depression. The authors of the new paper are careful to note that even if drinking is associated with longer life, it can be dangerous: it can affect your memory severely and it can lead to falls and other troubles that can affect your life. Theres also the dependency issue: if you bee addicted to alcohol, you may spend a long time trying to get off the bottle.28. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the standard explanation and the new paper?A. The latter finds that healthy abstainers have longer lives than heavy drinkers.B. The former finds that nondrinkers live longer than heavy drinkers.C. The latter finds that abstainers are more likely to die than heavy drinkers.D. The former finds that abstainers live longer than heavy drinkers.29. What can be concluded about moderate drinking?A. It is helpful for peoples blood circulation.B. It reduces peoples life stressors.C. It reduces peoples association with friends.D. It cuts off peoples connection with their familiars.30. Nondrinkers are more likely to be _.A. strict and cooperative with others. B. depressed and stressfulC. outgoing and responsible D. warm-hearted and dependent31. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 6 mean?A. The mortality rate of heavy drinkers will be lower if they give up drinking.B. Heavy drinkers can live longest even if they dont give up drinking.C. The mortality rate of heavy drinkers is lower than that of nondrinkers.D. Heavy drinkers may live longer as long as they give up drinking. D In any age, there ia always a need for teachers. Teachers are the most wonderful people in our life. Some are encouraging, loving and friendly. But some are rude, unfair and hated ones. I had a very bad teacher in my third grade. Fortunately, we passed into the fourth grade. To our surprise, we had a good teacher. She was very encouraging. She made students fortable and persuaded us to work to our best level. We were very happy to be with her. She presented gifts to us whenever we reached her target. We never realized that time was passing. The years passed, and I saw many teachers throughout my life. But I keep our favorite fourth grade teacher in my mind even now, and I pray for her. However, I dont like to think of my cruel third grade teacher. Look at the variation in people; who are the creators? I think all of us have e across these kinds of people. They should be our role models. 32. Which of the following words best describes the role of teachers in peoples life?A. Creative. B. Important C. Moving D. Pleasant33. Why didnt the author like his third grade teacher?A.
