It operated for the first time last year for a sixweek period from the middle of July until the end of August. This year well be holding the course again. Weve done our best to keep prices low so that it isnt too expensive for children to attend the course. There will be different things to do every week, so the children wont be repeating the same activities over and over again. However, I dont expect many children will come for the whole summer, as Im sure their parents will want to be with them for a week or two. We do, however, ask that children attend full weeks, not just single days. It makes it easier for us to keep attendance records. The course is currently available for children aged eight to thirteen. If a child or a childs parent is listening, and is interested in coming to my summer activity course, they should go to my website, www.summeractivities.co.uk and print out an application form. Send it in with part payment as soon as possible, because the places are going fast. Youll need to tell us which weeks you are planning to attend straight away, but you wont need to choose your activities in advance. You can choose what you want to do every Monday. We need to know if the child has any special needs regarding their diet.17What do we know about the course?AIt lasts four weeks.BIt is aimed at teenagers.CIt consists of different activities.答案:C18Why doesnt the course take up the whole summer holiday?AThat will be too expensive.BChildren will be bored with the same activities.CParents want to spend some time with their children.答案:C19What should one do first to take the course?ASend an application form.BVisit the speakers website.CPay the full amount of money immediately.答案:B20What does the speaker remind parents to do?AChoose their childrens favorite activities. One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine. The next moment, metal, flesh and bones were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash. Another cyclist, biking carelessly, had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic. As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life, another disaster also occurred on April 14th, 2010. It cost the airline industry $1.7 billion. Ten million travelers were stuck for days. Economics all over the world were disturbed. This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, one of Icelands many volcanoes. However, volcanoes are not all bad. In fact, they are necessary. They are responsible for the birth of new earth, and for the creation of rich soil. This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. But cancelling 48% of the worlds flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint. Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I would never have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations. In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal (地热的) energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future. I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a newfound love in Earth sciences. 21Which was an effect of the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull? AThe economy was cost globally by the eruption. BCarbon dioxide increased temporarily. CMost of the worlds planes were held up. DThe earth in Iceland was terribly polluted. 根据文章第二段中的“Economics all over the world were disturbed.” 22Why did the writer mention the Eldfell volcano? AIt broke out in Iceland on April 14th as well. BIt symbolized the accident that changed his life. CIt told us to make the best of a given situation. DIt encouraged him to know more about himself. 根据文章倒数第二段中的“After their plan worked . their homes.”并结合“One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future.” 23What is the best title for the passage? AEscape from Volcanoes BInspiration from Disasters CLove for Earth Sciences DAttitude Toward Nature答案:B标题判断题。 B(2019浙江省“五校联考”第一次考试)Emoji might not be your first choice of communication in a disaster, but researchers feel they could make a difference during emergencies, where every second counts. Now, the Emojiquake campaign is lobbying_for an earthquake emoji to be added to the Unicode setthe standard group of icons available on digital devices worldwide. The campaign aims to find an earthquakeappropriate design to be submitted to Unicode.“Approximately up to one third of the worlds population are exposed to earthquakes,” explains University of Southampton seismologist (地震学家) Dr Stephen Hicks, a founder of the campaign. “So we really want to be able to communicate to all of those regions, all of those different languages, and an emoji is an amazing way of doing that.”Unlike many other weather and climate related events, where longer warning times or visible signs are available, earthquakes move incredibly quickly and are difficult to measure while they are still occurring. Populations in areas like Japan and Mexico are dependent on earthquake early warning technology, which issues an alert on digital devices and broadcast media. “You may have seconds to get under a table or to protect yourself,” explains Dr Hicks. “That can be life saving in many cases. Naturally you dont want too much wording in the warning message.”Pictographs (象形文字) and other visuals like emoji have a track record of being faster and easier to understand than written information. Dr Sara McBride, a communications specialist, who is also part of the campaign, told BBC News, “Emoji can cross the boundaries of written languages, helping communicate valuable information to people who may struggle to read a certain language.”The potential usefulness of emoji in emergencies could extend well beyond earthquakes. A team of designers also came up with emerjian entire set of emoji dedicated to climate and environmental events. 24According to the passage, why did the campaign choose earthquakes as their target?ABecause earthquakes threaten many people in different regions.BBecause earthquakes are the easiest to be expressed by an emoji.CBecause earthquakes are not difficult to measure while occurring.DBecause earthquakes are the most destructive disasters in the world. 25Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “lobbying for” in the first paragraph?AHope for. BEnter for.CAppeal for. DRun for. 26What can we infer from Dr Sara McBrides words about emoji?AEmoji benefits people with reading disability a lot.BEmoji is being used to convey valuable information.CEmoji can cross the boundaries of written languages.DEmoji is a universal language and helpful tool in communication. 27The best title of the passage should be “_”ACould an emoji save our life?BWhat can emoji do in our life?CHow is emoji changing our life?DDo we really know about emoji? C(2019湖南省雅礼中学高三月考)Last year, three experienced storm chasers were killed in a tornado (龙卷风) in the US, but despite this the number of people going in search of tornadoes is growing. What drives them to take risks and look for danger? The man at the wheel glanced in the backview mirror and then slowly turned around. “Dont put this in your program.”he said. His wife in the passenger seat laughed. He lowered the window and killed the engine. The wind rushed in from surrounding wheat fields. Then, from behind, the sound of footsteps approached on the dirt road. It was a moment of peace after hours of speedy racing through the American grassland. There had been excited shouts about where a tornado might form and how we would be there if it did. We were crazy on the trail a moment ago. But now, everyone was very cool. A Kansas state trooper (骑警) introduced himself through the window. There was pretended surprise when he said how fast we had been going. Really? Wow, sorry.Val Cator handed over his arivers license. His wife, Amy, took the registration out of the glove box. Val explained they were storm chasers with Channel 9 News out of Oklahoma Citythough it was hardly necessary. Their huge black truck has lightning bolts (闪电) and Storm Tracker 9 painted on the sides.Val pointed to the radar on the laptop open next to him and said those red and green dots suggested a tornado could form this afternoon. The state trooper was untouched. “Ive got that in my car too.” he said. People here keep a close eye on the weather. Its part of living in the tornado alley. Every year some town or other is blown off the map by tornadoes that can reach 300 miles an hour.Val and Amy are just two of hundreds of possibly thousands of trackers who speed around with computers and cameras hoping to catch one of these beautiful, deadly storms. Id joined them to learn why the number of trackers keeps growing. Why are people taking real risksbeyond the steady diet of reststop junk foodto watch weather?Last year, a tornado killed three of the most experienced storm chasers. It picked up and threw their car as easily as you would a piece of paper. Dozens of other chasers were hurt in the same storm. They were crowded on a few roads when the tornado suddenly expanded and ate them. Val and Amy were there that day but still, in their words, chase aggressively. 28Why did everyone calm down after being crazy?ABecause they reached grassland.BBecause a tornado would come.CBecause a trooper stopped their car.DBecause they were cool on the trail. 根据第二段中的“We were crazy on the trail a moment ago . himself through the window.” C。29What could show Val Cators profession?AHis drivers license.BThe glove box.CThe signs painted on his trucks sides.DThe news of Oklahoma City. 根据第三段最后一句“Their huge black truck has lightning bolts (闪电) and Storm Tracker 9 painted on the sides.” C。30Which word can be used to describe Val and Amy?AHardworking. BAdventurous.CGenerous. DHumorous. 根据第五段“Val and Amy are just two of . to watch weather?” B。31The passage is mainly about _.Aa program about storm chasersBthe possible dangers that storm chasers faceCthe most violent tornado in the USDsome people who want to be close to tornadoes答案:D主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“Last year . then slowly turned around.”
