The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly. Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An agreesive(好斗的) bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned backthe sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger. I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long. Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear. The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break. Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attackthe first time I felt panic. Obviously satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. Im proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome. 5. The brown bear approached the family in order to _. Now a research by Cornell University suggests how lifestyle and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over. According to Dr.Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their lifestyle. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead ,tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Dont Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym. In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent lifestyle changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity or extreme overweight among adults is only 6.However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17 and is growing.8.In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr.Joseph Mercola?A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyle.D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.9.This text is mainly about the relationship between_.A. A health report. D. A book review.DHow fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone. The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (dont forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure youre brushing long enough. “Its kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor. The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says. Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes.” But Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed. The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U. S. is the first target market. Serval says that one day, itll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush. 11. Which is one of the features of the Kolibree toothbrush? A. It can sense how users brush their teeth. B. It can track users school performance. C. It can detect users fear of seeing a dentist. D. It can help users find their phones. 12. What can we learn from Servals words in Paragraph 3? A. You will find it enjoyable to see a dentist. B. You should see your dentist on a day-to-day basis. C. You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a dentist. D. Youd like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day. 13. Which of the following might make the Kolibree toothbrush fun? A. It can be used to update mobile phones. B. It can be used to play mobile phone games C. It can send messages to other users D. It can talk to its developers. 14. What can we infer about Servals children? A. They were unwilling to brush their teeth B. They often failed to clean their toothbrushes. C. They preferred to use a toothbrush with a dry head. D. They liked brushing their teeth after Serval came home. 15. What can we learn about the future development of the Kolibree? A. The brush handle will be removed. B. A mobile phone will be built into it. C. It will be used to fill holes in teeth D. However, according to a wide accepted theory, the universe began with a Big Bang that threw matter in all direction. For several billion years after the Big Bang, the earth was still just a cloud of dust. It is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water began to appear on its surface. Water had also appeared on another planets like Mars but, like the earth, it had disappeared later. What many scientists believe is that the continued presence of water allowed the earth to dissolve harm gases and acids into the oceans and seas. This produced a chain react
