E-books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares, but many publishers are too cautious(谨慎) about piracy( 盗 版 ) and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries.Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers(电子阅读器) are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money. If these people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient. Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. The files disappear from the device when they are due.E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible( 不兼容的) e-book formats, devices and licenses. Most libraries use a company called OverDrive, which secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format(格式). Yet publishers and libraries are worried by OverDrives global market dominance(主导), as the company can control fees and conditions. Publishers were annoyed when OverDrive cooperated with Amazon, the worlds biggest online bookseller, last year. Owners of Amazons Kindle e-reader who want to borrow e-books from libraries are now redirected to Amazons website, where they must use their Amazon account to secure a loan.According to Pew, an opinion researcher, library users are a perfect market for Amazon. Late last year Amazon introduced its Kindle Owners Lending Library, which lets its best customers borrow free one of thousands of popular books each month.Library supporters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers, and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new work. Many were cheered by a recent Pew survey, which found that more than half of Americans with library cards say they prefer to buy their e-books.So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance. Random House raised its licensing prices earlier this year, and Harper Collins limits libraries to lending its titles 26 times.24.It can be inferred from paragraph 1 that_.A. Libraries and publishers face the same problem of e-books privacy.B. Most publishers hesitate to cooperate with libraries.C. Libraries are eager to keep strong relationship with publishers.D. Several big publishers have sold e-books to libraries.25.Why are publishers worried that people will switch to electronic borrowing?A. Book sales may drop sharply because of convenient electronic borrowing.B. There are lots of different and incompatible e-book formats available.C. There is no time limit for the book files downloaded on the device.D. E-books must be checked out and returned to libraries regularly.26.We can learn from the passage that_.A. Amazon is adopting measures to win more customers.B. OverDrive distributes e-books and audio files to publishers.C. over half of Americans are borrowing e-books from libraries.D. e-books can be lent at libraries as many as you like.27.What is the best title for the text?A. The Hopeful Future of Publishing Business.B. The Dull Relationship between Libraries and Publishers.C. The Uncertain Economics of Lending E-books.D. The Close Cooperation between OverDrive and Amazon.CThe oddness (反常) of life in space never quite goes away. Here are some examples.First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its own challenges. The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny ballet(芭蕾) dancer. “Im an inside guy,” Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Station. “I like to be wrapped up.”On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise bike for the American astronauts has no handlebars. It also has no seat. With no gravity, its just as easy to pedal violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want. But station residents have to be careful about staying in one place too long. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale (呼气) has a tendency to form an invisible (隐形的) cloud around you head. You can end up with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.Leroy Chiao, 54, an American retired astronaut after four flights, describes what happens even before you float out of your seat, “Your inner ear thinks youre falling. Meanwhile your eyes are telling you youre standing straight. That can be annoyingthats why some people feel sick.” Within a couple daystruly terrible days for some astronauts, brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear, and space sickness disappears.Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous. For instance, astronauts lose bone mass. Thats why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) puts it right on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individual astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how to keep strong and healthy for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.28. What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?A. Deciding on a proper sleep position B. Choosing a comfortable sleeping bagC. Seeking a way to fall asleep quickly D. Finding a right time to go to sleep.29. The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when .A. they circle around on their bikes B. they use microcomputers without a stopC. they exercise in one place for a long time D. they watch a movie while pedaling30. Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because .A. their senses stop working B. they have to stand up straightC. they float out of their seats unexpectedly D. their brains receive completely different messages31. One of the NASAs major concerns about astronauts is .A. how much exercise they do on the station B. how they can remain healthy for long in spaceC. whether they can recover after returning home D. whether they are able to go back to the stationDOnline reviews can be highly entertaining, and theoretically, they should be helping us make good decisions about what to spend our money on As it turns out, however, they do help us make decisions-just not necessarily the best ones, according to a new study led by Derek Powell, a Stanford University postdoctoral research fellowSpecifically, the study shows that we arc more likely to buy a product that has more reviews than a product that has less, even if the product with more reviews has lower ratings(评分)That tendency is so strong, in fact, that given a choice between two products that have equally bad reviews, we still tend to buy the one with more reviews-even though the higher number of reviews means that the product is even more likely to be bad(because more people agree that its bad).Dr Powell and his colleagues asked several hundred people to look at a series of cell phone cases, presented in pairs along with the average user rating and number of reviews for each case, and then asked them to decide which case they would be more likely to purchase For each pair, the participants tended to choose the case that had more reviews, rather than better reviews This herd-mentality is a function of social learning, according to Dr Powell Social learning is the process by which new behaviors are learned through observing the behavior of others We found that people had a tendency to choose to purchase more popular products and that this often led them to make very poor decisions, Dr Powell explains in a press release by the Association for Psychological Science Our data suggest that consumers might need to do more to educate themselves about how to use reviews to guide their choices That includes absorbing the idea that a larger number of reviews is not necessarily a guarantee of a products quality32. According to the study, which word best describes online reviews? _ A. UnpracticalB. BoringC. Misleading(误导的) D. Unnecessary33. The study shows that people tend to buy products with _ A. more reviews B. better quality C. higher ratings D. fewer bad reviews34.
