But one of the most popularpulling the wishbonedates back centuries. The upside-down V-shaped bone is actually called the furcula(叉骨). It is a bone located between a turkeys neck and its breast. Furcula means “little fork” in Latin. All birds have a wishbone. At Thanksgiving, the tradition is for two people to hold one end of the bone, make a wish, and then tug(用力拉). The winner is the person who ends up with the bigger piece. If you believe the legend, the winners wish will come true. The practice of making a wish on a birds furcula dates back to the ancient Etruscans, a people who lived in what is today northern Italy. They believed birds were powerful and divine (非凡的)creatures. After killing a chicken, an Etruscan would leave the wishbone in the sun to dry. Passersby would pick it up, stroke it for good luck, and make a wish. That is how the furcula got the name “wishbone.”The Etruscans passed the ritual (仪式)along to the Romans. Soon, the practice of making a wish on a chickens furcula became popular in ancient Rome. According to legend,it was so widespread that there werent enough chickens or wishbones to go around. So the Romans began breaking the wishbone in two. Now, twice as many people could make wishes. Then the English picked up the tradition. In the 16th century, English settlers brought the practice to the New World. There, they found an abundance of wild turkeys. The death marks the passing of a controversial figure who made a major impact on international affairs during his long rule. The Cuban government declared nine days of official mourning. On Monday, thousands of Cubans lined up near Havanas Plaza of the Revolution to pay their final respects to their leader. On Wednesday,Castros ashes will begin a three-day journey across Cuba to Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba. Castro was born into a middle-class family on August 13, 1926. He spent his childhood alongside the laborers on his fathers plantation (种植园). In 1945, Castro entered the University of Havana as a law student. He later joined groups that sought to end dictatorships in Latin-American countries. On July 26. 1953,Castro staged an unsuccessful revolt(叛乱)against Batistas government. He and his brother Raul were captured and imprisoned for two years. After they were freed, the brothers went into exile in Mexico, On November 25, 1956,Castro set out once again to overthrow Batista. His revolution grew in strength. On New Year s Day 1959, Batista fled from Cuba. Castro took absolute power on January 8. The U.S. viewed Castros relationship with the Soviet Union as a threat. In 1961,President John F. Kennedy approved the invasion of Cuba by 1, 500 Cuban exiles. They landed on April 17 at the Bay of Pigs, but with little U. S. military support. Cuban troops smashed the attack within a few days. In October 1962,Castro confronted Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, during which he allowed the Soviet Union to place nuclear-capable missiles in Cuba. By that time, the U. S. had cut all relations with Cuba. After the Soviet Union collapsed(崩溃)in 1991,Cuba lost its economic support. To fuel the economy, the Cuban government allowed outside investment in hotels and resorts, but that created inequality. Meanwhile, Castro continued to crack down on any opposition. The collapse of the Soviet Union.D Some of the worlds most significant problems never hit headlines. One example comes from agriculture. Food riots(暴乱)and hunger make news, but the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decline in the growth in yields of some of the worlds major crops. A new study by the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring. The authors take a vast number of data pointing for the four most important crops; rice, wheat, corn and soybeans. They find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas, the improvement in yields that took place before the 1980s slowed down in the 1990s and 2000s.There are two worrying features of the slowdown. One is that it has been particularly sharp in the worlds most populous(人口多的) countries,India and China. Their ability to feed themselves has been an important source of relative stability both within the countries and on world food markets. That self-sufficiency cannot be taken for granted if yields continue to slow down or reverse. Second, yield growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in com and soybeans. This is problematic because wheat and rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of all calories consumed. Corn and soybeans are more important as feed grains. The authors note that we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world. ” The report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organization has argued. Instead,it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land currently ploughed (耕)up for crops might be able to revert to forest or wilderness. This could happen. The trouble is that the forecast assumes continued improvements in yields, which may not actually happen.32. Which crops are mentioned in the text?A. Rice, corn, soybeans and wheat.B. Rice, corn, wheat and peas.C. Wheat, corn, soybean and potatoes.D. Corn, wheat, tomatoes and soybeans.33. What does the author try to draw attention to?A. Food riots and hunger in the world.B. Their self-sufficiency is vital to the stability of world food markets.B. Their food yields have begun to decrease sharply in recent years.C. Their big populations are causing worldwide concerns.D.
