But at about age 15 or so, the men voluntarily began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other activities. These men tended to view their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions in their daily routines. In general, these “short sleeps” appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful, conformist(不 动 摇 ) in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or workers full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear “normal” or “acceptable” to their friends and associates. When asked to recall their dreams, the “short sleepers” did poorly. More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away. The sleep patterns of the “short sleepers” were similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic(疯 人 ). The “long sleepers” were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concerned when they were occasionally deprived of their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recall their dreams much better than did the “short sleepers.” Many of the “long sleepers” were shy, anxious, introverted (内 向 ), inhibited (压 抑 ), passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations). Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems. 21. According to the report,_. A、 many short sleepers need less sleep by nature B、 many short sleepers are obliged to reduce their nightly sleep time because they are busy with their work C、 long sleepers sleep a longer period of time during the day D、 many long sleepers preserve their sleeping habit formed during their childhood 22. Many “short sleepers” are likely to hold the view that _. A、 sleep is a withdrawal from the reality B、 sleep interferes with their sound judgement C、 sleep is the least expensive item on their routine program D、 sleep is the best way to deal with psychological troubles 23、 It is stated in the third paragraph that short sleepers _. A、 are ideally vigorous even under the pressures of life B、 often neglect the consequences of inadequate sleep C、 do not know how to relax properly D、 are more unlikely to run into mental problems 24、 Which of the following is Not included in the passage? A、 If one sleeps inadequately, his performance suffers and his memory is weakened B、 The sleep patterns of short sleepers are exactly the sane as those shown by many mental patients C、 Long and short sleepers differ in their attitudes towards sleep D、 Short sleepers would be better off with more rest B Psychologists take opposing views of how external rewards, from warm praise to old cash, affect motivation and creativity. Behaviorists, who study the relation between actions and, argue that rewards can improve performance at work and school. Some other researchers who study various aspects of mental life, maintain those rewards often destroy creativity byencouraging dependence on approval and gifts from others. The latter view has gained many supporters, especially among educators. But the careful use of small monetary rewards sparks in grade-school children suggesting that properly presented inducements indeed aid inventiveness, according to a study in the June Journal Personality and Social Psychology. 英语 第 5 页 共 14 页 “If they know theyre working for a reward and can focus on a relatively challenging task, they show the most creativity,” says Robert Esenberger of the University of Delaware in Newark. “But its easy to kill creativity by giving rewards for poor performance or creating too much anticipation for rewards.” A teacher who continually draws attention to rewards or who hands out high grades for ordinary achievement ends up with uninspired students, Esenberger holds. As an example of the latter point, he notes growing efforts at major universities to tighten grading standards and restore falling grades. In earlier grades, the use of so-called token economics, in which students handle challenging problems and receive performance-based points toward valued rewards, shows promise in raising effort and creativity, the Delaware psychologist claims. 25.Psychologists are divided with regard to their attitudes toward _. A、 the choice between spiritual encouragement and monetary rewards B、 the appropriate amount of external rewards C、 the study of relationship between actions and D、 the effects of external rewards on students performance 26.What is the view held by many educators concerning external rewards for students? A、 They approve of external rewards. B、 They dont think external rewards. C、 They have doubts about external rewards. D、 They believe external rewards can motivate small children, but not college students. 27、 According to the result of the study mentioned in the passage, what should educators do to stimulate motivation and creativity? A、 Give rewards for performances which deserve them. B、 Always promise rewards. C、 Assign tasks which are not very challenging. D、 Be more lenient to students when mistakes are made. 28.It can be inferred from the passage that major universities are trying to tighten their grading standards because they believe _. A、 rewarding poor performance may kill the creativity of students B、 punishment is more effective than rewarding C、 failing uninspired students helps improve their overall academic standards D、 discouraging the students anticipation for easy rewards is matter of urgency C Until the 1980s, the American homeless population comprised mainly older males. Today, homelessness strikes much younger part of society. In fact, a 25-city survey by the U. S. Conference of Mayors in 1987 found that families with children make up the fastest growing part of the homeless population. Many homeless children gather in inner cities; this transient(变 化 无 常 的 ) and frequently frightened student population creates additional problems both legal and educational for already overburdened urban school administrators and teachers. Estimates of the number of homeless Americans range from 350,000 to three million. Likewise, estimates of the number of homeless school children vary radically. A U.S. Department of Education report, based on state estimates, states that there are 220,000 homeless school-age children, about a third of whom do not attend school on a regular basis, But the National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that there are at least two times as many homeless children, and that less than half of them attend school regularly. One part of the homeless population that is particularly difficult to count consists of the “throwaway” youths who have been cast of their homes. The Elementary School Center in New York City estimates that there are 1.5 million of them, many of whom are not counted as children because they do not stay in family shelters and tend to live by themselves on the streets. Federal law, the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, includes a section that addresses the educational needs of homeless children. The educational provisions of the McKinney Act are based on the belief that all homeless children have the right to a free, appropriate education. 29. It is implied in the first paragraph that _. A、 the writer himself is homeless, even in his eighties 英语 第 7 页 共 14 页 B、 many older homeless residents are going on strike in 25 cities C、 there is a serious shortage of academic facilities D、 homeless children are denied the opportunity of receiving free education 30. The National Coalition for the homeless believes that the number of homeless children is _. A、 350,000 B、 1,500,000 C、 440,000 D、 110,000 31. The McKinney Act is mentioned in this passage in order to show that _. A、 the educational problems of homeless children are being recognized B、 the estimates on homeless children are hard to determine C、 the address of grade-school children should be located D、 all homeless people are entitled to free education 32. The passage mainly deals with _. A、 the legal problems of the homeless children B、 the educational problems of homeless children C、 the social status of older males D、 estimates on the homeless population D It is doing something better than other people that makes us unique. Yet a surprising number of people still see individuality as a surface thing. They wear bright clothes, dye their hair strange colors and decorate their skin with tattoos (文 身 ) to make some kind of social statement. The whole purpose of individuality is excellence. The people who comprehend the simple principle of being unique through performance make our entire political and economic system work. Those who invent, who improve, who know more about a subject than other people do, and who take something that doesnt work and make it workthese people are the very soul of capitalism. Charles Kettering didnt like the idea of cranking a car to make it start, so he invented the electric starter. Henry Ford figured out the assembly-line technique and made it possible to mass-produce automobiles. Lewis Waterman saw no need to go on dipping a pen into an inkwell, so he put the ink into the pen. George Westinghouse told the world how to stop a train, and Elisha Otis, inventor of the elevator, indirectly created the city skyline. These people understood that individualism means working at the top of ones capacity. Fortunately, enough Americans have been inspired to do something with their uniqueness that we have developed in less than three centuries from a frontier outpost into not only a country of freedom but a country strong enough to protect that freedom. These people prized the notions of individuality and excellence above all things and thus kept the great machine functioning. The ones with the purple hair and the horrorable jewelry are just along for the ride, trying to be “different“ and not knowing how to go about it. The student who earns As on his report card has grasped the idea and has found the real meaning of individuality. So has the youngster who has designed his own spaceship, who paints pictures of the world around him, or who can name all the states and their capitals. 33、 According to the author unique individuals are persons who _. A. do something better than other people B. know more about a subject than other people C. excel others in work D. all of the above 34、 People who regard individuality as a surface thing always do the following EXCEPT _. A. wearing bright clothes B. coloring their hair C. doing better than others D. decorating their skin with tattoos 35、 Which is NOT TRUE according to the passage? A. Henry Ford invented assembly-line technique. B. Elisha Otis was the inventor of the lift C. George Westinghouse created cranks. D. Lewis Waterman put the ink into the pen. 第 2 节 ( 共 5 小 题 , 每 小 题 2 分 , 满 分 10 分 ) 根 据 短 文 内 容 , 从 短 文 后 的 选 项 中 选 出 能 填 在 空 白 处 的 最 佳 选 项 , 并 在 答 题 英语 第 9 页 共 14 页 卡 上 将 该 项 涂 黑 , 选 项 中 有 两 项 是 多 余 的 选 项 。 It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult. Most do not fully see this truth. 36 It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation. 37 Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomforable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy. 38 39 When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. 40 As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.“ It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems. A. Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. B. Life is not a trap set for us by God so that he can condemn us for failing. C. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. D. Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. E. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. F.We can register to make money and participate in problem solving collaboration (合 作 、 协 作 ) groups. G. What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. 第 三 部 分 : 英 语 知 识 运 用 ( 共 两 节 , 满 分 45 分 ) 第 一 节 : 完 形 填 空 ( 共 20 小 题 , 每 小 题 1.5 分 , 满 分 30 分 ) 阅 读 下 列 短 文 , 从 每 题 所 给 出 的 四 个 选 项 ( A、 B、 C 和 D) 中 , 选 出 最 佳 选 项 , 并 在 答 题 卡 上 将 该 项 涂 黑 。 The question of whether war is inevitable is one which has concerned many of the worlds great writers. Before 41 this question, it will be useful to introduce some 42 concepts. Conflict, 43 as opposition among social units-or individuals-directed against one another, is 44 from competition, which 45 opposition among social units 46 seeking to obtain something which is 47 inadequate supply. Competitors may not know about one another, which those who 48 in a conflict do. Conflict and competition are both 49 of opposition. The meaning of opposition has been stated as a process by which social unit function in the disservice of one another, opposition is 50 contrasted to cooperation, a 51 by which social units function in the service of one another. These 52 are necessary because it is important to emphasize that competition between individuals or groups is inevitable in a world of limited 53 , but conflict isnt . Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur and is probably an essential and desirable 54 of human societies. Many authors have 55 their arguments that war cannot be avoided on the idea that in the struggle for existence among groups of animals, only those which are best 56 remain alive. In general, however, this struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Those who fail in this competition 57starve to death or are 58 by other types of animals. This struggle for 59 is not similar to human war, but is like the competition of 60
